Default Depoe Report

Woke up this morning at 6 am and the bouy said 8 knot east wind and 5.3 foot swell!!! We were planning on kickin' it in the Newport (I only have a 15.5' Gregor), but decided to head up to Depoe. It was a great decision as the ocean was quit nice today. Got out on the water about 8 a.m. and headed out of the gap. We went straight to our rockfish spot (1 mi. S of the Bell bouy) and immediately caught a few greenling and blacks. Fillet a black and set the crab pot. Went back to our rockfish spot and proceded to knock the snot out of 1-4 pounders on bass rods. I also dropped down the meat stick for some lings. We caught 8, but no keepers (3 were 23":/. Headed in at 11:30 and checked the crab pot. Got two keepers. Stopped and checked out the cool wooden boats, canoes and kayaks on display, cleaned the fish and were back in Corvallis by 2 pm so my wife could get to work by 3:30. What a great day on the coast. The weather could not have been better...let's just hope it last another 11 days!!!

Thanks for the report! I have never taken my boat out of Depoe. It would be a lot closer than going to Newport. I am planning a run on Friday or Saturday conditions permitting. Just head South one mile after reaching the BB? Anything specific to be looking for on my depth finder? Should I know anything special about going out in that area?

Thanks.

There are reefs all over out there, both N and S of the Bell bouy. I like fishing shallow, so I just look for reefs in 40-60 feet of water with fish on them. There are tons of blacks and lots of lings, but not many keepers. Going in and out of Depoe looks gnarly, but is actually no problem. I only go out of there if the swell is < 6 feet. See you out there.

Tacklebuster,

Make sure you take a look at a chart of the Depoe Bay entrance before you go. It kind of snakes around. Once you're outside, on your return to the bay, there are 2 red lights underneath the bridge, these are channel markers. Get your boat in a position so that the 2 lights are aligned vertically and you're lined up in the channel.
(If you don't have a paper chart to look at you can use this link for an electronic version, Sea Tow Chart Link )

Also, if you've got GPS, you'll want to make sure it's on before you leave the bar so you'll have a plot line to return on if the fog moves in.

Have fun!
