Been there done that QF. When the dogfish are thick, I don't know of anything to use but artificals. I've fished the Strait when you couldn't keep them off, and other times you don't catch any. You're pipe jigs should work rather well, as do any large jigs.

IMHO, take lots of herring and just keep feeding the dogs. Don't keep fishing one place if the dogs are thick. Try several spots and sooner or later you should find your butt. You're arms will stop hurting after a few days...

I fish Neah Bay annually. When we come up on that issue we have used plastics and they com ein various sizes and shapes. Glow types work best. Also when you drop your bait drop it as fast as you can that seems to help.

Sounds like you don't have any electric reels either Mello Yello.

Oh man. We only fished 300-350 feet down, but almost always had to run 48 oz lead due to tides. I've gone through half a dozen packs of horse herring (6 per pack) in a morning. It's kinda funny too, everyone says "Make sure you club those dogfish before you release them, we don't want them to multiply"....It's all one can do to not completely mutilate them out of frustration.

But, if you get your butt on the 33rd herring, so be it. At this point it's all worth it!

I like to put a taste of squid on my jigs. Lings and Butts seem to like it and sometimes it makes a big difference over the jigs without. Worth a try sometimes.
