Talking Upgrade or not?

Some might say that what I'm doing is not an upgrade, but for duck purposes, it clearly is. I'm downgrading a foot in length and almost 200 horsepower, but I still get a boat capable of going every where I want to hunt, but that is small enough (and the right color) to hide (and hunt out of if we wish).

Big red went to the dealer to be sold. I said goodbye to her this morning. It was a sad parting. She was a heck of a boat, and served our needs for salmon, ducks and wakeboarding for 4 years.

Here is what I plan to pick up from a private seller next weekend:

Its basically a super vee in 17', with a 90 pump. Mid '80s model owned by an older gentleman and duck hunter who can't get out on the water as much as he used to. Set up for ducks and fishing. All I have to do is get Fyshndad to put camo on it by the opener, and I'm set.

It will also make a much better Sellwood boat than the red, shiny Weldcraft; one that I can beat up a little and not cringe every time a scratch shows up or blood and guts get strewn everywhere.

I've almost had enough tuna to fill the pantry, so bring on duck season!

Thanks man. I searched on all the regional Craigslists and Boat Traders for months before I found something that made my socks go up and down.

Looks like a boat I can keep for a long time.

Pretty close, but not quite.

We shall see all covered in camo netting though.

Mike, you are more than welcome to ride along with me this year. My trips will get cut down a bit because of the new baby, but I'll definitely get some use out of it.

You going to be at Garibaldi next weekend?

I like the new boat. Have been enjoying your posts for the past couple of years and it will be nice to see the new iron in future posts. You don't see a lot of people down sizing, what with 2 foot-itis and all, but that boat looks like the best of both worlds: v-hull and jet.

This is a loaded question. IMO you need both. I think you can never have a great cross boat. Pretty tough to make the decision. After years of back and forth I finally ended up with these.

Funny you should say that. Next year, the plan is to get one of these, in white, and in 24', for family, wakeboarding, and an occasional trip onto the big blue pond.

NWP,
Can I come hang out in your shop? Looks like lots of stuff to dream about. If not, can I just borrow some decoys?

Dave,
That is funny you picked that boat. I looked over the same one the other day. I thought it would make a great duck hunting boat.

Good choice. I plan to pick it up in a few days. Still big enough to hit the lower river, yet light enough to push off a sandbar here and there on the way to hunting/fishing grounds. (don't ask me how I know this). Great hull to repower down the road as well, if the main gets tired.

The gentleman who owns it has hunted ducks out of it for many years. I'm glad I put a deposit down on it, because the owner called back the next day to say he had 2 full price cash offers.
