cedar plug question
Why do they use cedar to make cedar plugs
ya ya, I know if they used Alder they would be alder plugs
But seriously why do they use Cedar to make fishing plugs? I know cedar has a high resistance to rotting, can it be that?? I would think any soft wood would work.

Re: cedar plug question
I'm note sure they really do any more. Mine are all trussed up in fancy paint clothing so they may be plastic for all I know!
Proly just tradition, named after the first one that got carved by hand.
Same reason Rapala's are made of Balsa (are they still?).
Light (floats good), cheap, easy to work/lathe etc.
I could not believe these things the first time I used them. They look like they would just go through the water like a torpedo. We had several fish on them on long lines and I finally put one out short and messed around with it to "check the spin" and watch it . That dang thing had more action to it than a one armed paper hanger on a pogo stick! I just couldn't believe how it danced out there.
PS- besides, fir plug sounds like a hairball!

Keta-
At least I got this one. I'm still trying to figure out this one:
Rumor has it this wasn't Olli's only claim to fame. As a child, while playing on the streets of brooklynn, NY, a neighbor kid asked if anyone was free to try a new game they had just invented. His reply was "Yah! Ollie Autzin Free!"...

Re: cedar plug question
BOE,
I don't think the fish are too picky about it. On my first trip we lost a bunch of lures so we dug thru the tacklebox to see what else we could use. We ended up tying one of these onto a tuna leader and banged two fish with it "as is".

Tim,
Do what I did. Line the inside of your hat with aluminum foil and the problem goes away.

Keta- you won't drink beer out of a can but you have aluminium on the brain? No wonder! I suppose you sleep in your Gortex jammies too?

Re: cedar plug question
Actually, the name "Cedar Plug" has nothing to do with the cedar tree at all.
The name was actually derived from an Austrian immigrant by the name of Olli Autzin. During the early 30s, Olli worked on numerous tuna boats off the coast of S. California. When asked one day what they used to catch tuna, he pointed at a hand-carved fish hanging from his out-rigger and replied "See der plug?"
Rumor has it this wasn't Olli's only claim to fame. As a child, while playing on the streets of brooklynn, NY, a neighbor kid asked if anyone was free to try a new game they had just invented. His reply was "Yah! Ollie Autzin Free!"...
Ok, I'm done now....
