Greatest fish out of the salt.
Well, it's friday and I have way too mcu free time today at the office. Just dreaming about the ocean today, and good memories. Here's a thread to start:
What's you greatest fish taken from the salt.
For me, it was a fish never landed. I was night fishing from a party boat for blues out of Long Island, some years ago. I hooked into this fish that just kicked my butt. Fought if for about 1/2 an hour. The captain was ready to call it a night and head in, so he told me I had about 10 minutes to do something. Gained some, lost some, back and forth.
Finally the skipper tells me we are outta here, even with the others cheering me on for support. He fires up the
diesels to leave. As we motored away, my line just starts to peel off, nothing I could do. I cnak down on the drag, thumb the spool and eventually, CRACK!! It was the most demoralizing experience. To this day I think about that big dog down there in the dark depths. Maybe a big mako, a swordfish, small great white. Who knows. That's the great thing about big blue, ya never know what's gonna hit the hook.

Herring to halibut and more they're all fun to catch, with the exception of turbot, humpie and ratfish.

Re: Greatest fish out of the salt.
I would have to say a 42lb king that my girl caught all on her own. Using a straight herring and banana weight out of sekiu. She rigged it, adjusted the roll and let her down. 10 minutes in to the troll the rod buired down and and didn't come back up for also 45 minutes. After a long fought battle we get this thing next to the boat, I reach down and tail grab the fish and bring it in for a quick pic. The fish was so big that she couldn't hold it by her self so my buddy took a quick pic of her and myself with the fish. Back in she when with a tail splash to the face. The look on her face in the pic is worth a million bucks.

Re: Greatest fish out of the salt.
My greatest salty fish.....
It was about 2:00pm, about 27 miles off the Kona Coast. Teasers had been hit twice, and I pulled off a successfull bait and switch, the fight was on Mr marlin wouldnt show much of himself to us and instead decided to dive deep, the skipper hammered the boat hard in reverse and the chase was on! The 200lb gear I had strapped to myself was screaming and smoking! A bucket of water in my lap quenched the line, but nothing could stop the fire in my forearms as I held on for dear life, then it happened. Mr Pointy Nose changed tactics and headed for the surface....in a big way! Rocketing completely out of the water bathed in white foam, the skipper screamed "That may be a grandy!" I pumped that telephone pole sized rod up and down in the fighting chair holder. Nothing was going to stop me from getting that beast to the boat....that is until the skipper shouted down to me "Hey Buddy, you've been asleep in that chair for an Hour, you better get out of that sun for a while!" Ok so my one and only Kona "trip of a lifetime" had turned out to be a huge bust (save for the 20 or so 6lb yellow fins we caught for bait) I wouldnt trade the memory of that day for anything!
Only other notable salty fish was my 47lb Halibut caught off Kodiak Island when I was about 7 years old. You should have seen the look on my face when they started Steaking that fish! I was so upset I couldnt take it home (Back to seattle)whole and show it off to my friends at school.
