First steel of the year...
Went out to the Wilson River yesterday afternoon after work. The trip started out as one of the most frustrating fishing trips of my life. First cast, I toss my jig & float into a low overhanging tree. Lost everything  . I was intent on fishing jigs, however, I only had smaller floats with me (ones I use for the smaller summer steelhead jigs). Frustratingly I tied on several different combinations of jig & float, and either the jig is to heavy, and submerges the float or the float is too big, the jig can't pull it down all of the way. After 45 minutes of playing that game, I finally gave up on jigs for the day. I tied on a simple corky and yarn, to realize that the hole I was at wasn't ideal for drift fishing. At this point I almost went home, I pretty much figured it wasn't my day.... But I decided to move down river a little... First cast, fish on! The Buck jumped once, but overall it was an easy fight. Still very exciting to get my first fish of the year! (It was only my second time out too).
I know he's no chromer, but i'll still eat him. Plus, I did my part in saving the native population, I bonked a hatchery fish!
(Wow, my eyes look wicked in that pic, must be the flash)

Re: First steel of the year...
Sometimes it only takes one fish to make your day. Nice job.

Re: First steel of the year...
Way to go Ska... never underestimate hom much good you ar doing by removing hatchery fish from the river... It's almost as important as releasing the wild fish you catch..

Re: First steel of the year...
Good job Ska! Yeah we definately need to get those hatchery fish out of the upper river. I am amazed at how far up they stray.
Rob you are correct!

Re: First steel of the year...
Mark,
Yea, one fish does really make your day! Had I left early, I would have been angry the rest of the evening, but catching that fish... I couldn't get the grin off my face  The one thing that does make me angry is my First Cast Jig hanging in that tree right now.... You'll see an order from me shortly !
BD,
I can't wait until Saturday. Sun should be out, water should be clear, and the Springer WILL be biting!
ORS,
More like Bobber UP! In the trees that is...

Good job! With tinacity like that...the fish don't have a chance! Way to keep at it! I've been there...ticked off...ready to leave...then wham....fish on ....and I keep fishin' on...hoping for the limit!

Re: First steel of the year...
Great job! That'll taste good on the BBQ. Try basting on the Barbie with garlic butter, yum yum.

Re: First steel of the year...
Stew,
First off... How did you know I was on the upper river? (Is there twilight zone music playing?) And second, where is the hatchery on the Wilson, I've always wondered....
Thanks!

Re: First steel of the year...
SKA,
Upper river? Your waders are still wet and the background looks like the upper part of the river. Congrats on the fish. I'll be looking for your bobber and jig this weekend! I found about 20 different set ups.
