Aqua Velvet Update
Since our incident during the Hammond OTC, my boat has been at the shop. Yesterday my mechanic called me to inform me that the repairs on Aqua Velvet are done. It always takes a little longer when the insurance company gets involved. Initially we thought would require a whole new outdrive, but after tear-down the only damage found was the destruction of the innards of the lower unit. The insurance company accepted the claim....I just pay the <choke> deductible. I should get the boat back today. Then this weekend I get the privilege of burning about <choke> 3/4 of a tank of fuel to break in the new lower unit (10 hours). Then we should be ready to get back on the pond.

Kerry, What about the hole in the outdrive? What did they do there? Glad you got the insurance to pay. Remarkable.

Re: Aqua Velvet Update
The hole was in the lower unit. Whatever happened to cause the failure caused the pinion nut to spin off and parts were ejected through the lower unit housing. I am getting the lower unit back so I can dissect, look and take some pics.

Good to hear your up and running. Will you get a tuna test run prior to OTC?

Re: Aqua Velvet Update
Kerry my Alpha 1 lower 1/2 did that this spring. The pinion nut came undone and the thing exploded. After several months I found the box of old parts from the rebuild last fall. In the bottom of the box were the new pinion lock nut and spring washer which I neglected to replace during the rebuild.
Oops.
Understanding the failure is the key to preventing another one. Good luck with the break in.

Re: Aqua Velvet Update
Thanks all....now to figure out what to do for 10 hours on the CR this weekend.
Maybe I'll pull the kids around on the tube, make a run up to Bonneville, turn around, go down to the Willamette and up to Oregon City. Or maybe just point west and run to Astoria and back. It's gonna be a long, expensive weekend.

Re: Aqua Velvet Update
That run down to Astoria is pretty. If you've never done it this could be a good time since you have to burn the gas anyway.
