NorRivDave,
That's actually Fred Wahl Marine at Toledo ... if you have a chance to get your

Re: Bottom Paint
OK!!! I know about the deals at Fred,s. He chooses to run his business different than I run mine and do not feel like contributing to his cause.
Miss B,
I have a new glass boat on a trailer.
P.S.
I would love to see your Tolly sometime

Re: Bottom Paint
Could it be the Yacht Doctor? He has worked on my boat for years and does top notch bottom painting on my 42'. I am in the same Marina as Mel. The Doctors name is Lonny Freeburg. His pager # is (503 ) 294-2769. Tell him Tod sent you.
A friend of mine sued the Rocky Point Marina for over charging way beyond the quote. Very similar to the story shared about the place in Newport. I have found it really pays to ask a lot of people to find a highly recommended place for reliable boat repair. Thus, the good ones are often hard to book when you want them, but worth the wait. By the way, I have also heard good things about the old Eagle Marine. New name, but several boats I know have been happy with big jobs they did there.

Re: Bottom Paint
Hmm... my price in Rocky was right in line with what the fixed rates were. I heard something about somebody who had some boot stripes painted that was unhappy with the price. Bottom paint there is by the foot so quality should be your only concern on bottom paint. Other work - don't know.
Eagle is not just under a new name- whole new ownership- important difference. I went there to have my 24 done when it was eagle - the guy didn't even know what ablative paint was - he said " you mean sloughing - you don't want that!" after I expained that my boat was trailerable but a fast planing hull, he wanted to know why I wanted it bottom painted at all then. I politely backed out and left. Word on the river is - the new guy knows what he's doing and is fair.
I think it was the Yacht Doctor that did my bro-inlaws bottom   I shouldn't talk about my relatives in public now should I

Re: Bottom Paint
OK- So first of all you have to go with an Ablative paint. Micron CSC (or Micron Extra- they changed the name and I can't remember which way it went) is my recommendation. I've used it, it's great and Power Boat Reports has an onging test and it always comes out on or in the top. Other brands will work but it needs to be ablative (AKA - copolymer). Micron is not cheap, one of the most expensive but given the labor cost it's a nit to get the best.
If you use a "hard" (modified epoxy) bottom paint it will oxidize the surface of the copper when left out of the water for any extended (weeks) period of time and render it almost usless. You would need to light sand prior to lauching to get the surface back.
Ablatives dissolve away like a bar of soap- always exposing new copper to prevent the growth. Two more advantages of ablatives. Since they "wash away" you don't build up layer after layer of thick paint over the years and then have to sand it all off. The other advantage is since it washes away, you can easily tell when it needs redone. The underlying gelcoat or epoxy primer starts showing though.
Also- I had my 96 done professionally the first time. The next time I was able to do it myself. The "line" was already on the boat so it was easy to tape off and what I found was that the actual bottom was in pretty good shape. It was the sides at the waterline, the transom and the keel that were gone, all the areas of highest turbulence (all the bubbles and sticks and stuff hit there).
It was easy to paint these areas right on the trailer. I put 2 coats on all these high wear areas and then coated the whole hull.
Now - For what you actually wanted to know. Rocky Point (Multn. Chan.) did my Tolly last spring and did a good job (with one exception below). The price is a fixed rate per foot to apply 2 coats. They will need to prep the bottom and they'll charge you by the hour to light sand it (proly a couple hours). If you want epoxy first (they may insist if it's a first time paint -not sure) it's so much a foot too. At least you will know before starting what the cost is.
The only problem I had was they sanded the old (Epoxy - and it was thick and chipping in places) bottom paint on Miss B and the boat was wet on the gunnels etc when they did it. The copper turned all those water spots into black water spots when it dried. An acid wash would take it off but I had the hull waxed and wouldn't let them. It faded away on it's own after a while. I would make them cover (plastic) the whole boat before they started (and pay for it).
I have heard good things about what used to be Eagle Marine on up the Channel from Rocky point (between Larsons and Freds). Can't remember the new name- I can get it if you want.
Also -If you don't mind a little messing around yourself I believe you could have it blocked up at Channel Marine and have a contractor third party do the paint there. My bro-inlaw did that. The guy was called the Bottom Doctor or something like that. I could get info if you want. He was happy with that whole thing too.

Re: Bottom Paint
Warrenton Boat Works in Warrenton did my Sea Sport. Old time family company with a good reputation. Not the cheapest price I found, but they were convenient to my moorage at Warrenton and very professional. From my experience, I'd recommend them. Call Charles Salmi at (503) 861-1311.

Re: Bottom Paint
Pitch- I have heard nothing but good about Warrenton. Only reason I didn't suggest it was the distance and I wasn't sure if they had lift/blocking capability. They use the railways for the boats in the water. I guess it would be pretty easy to launch right there and run across the creek though!
I'll have my next bottom job doen there. Just take the boat down to Warrenton a little earlier in the season. Once the fishing starts- don't want to be down (or up in this case)!

Re: Bottom Paint
Mel, they knocked it out PDQ, 2 or 3 days I think. No need to go down too soon, just make an appointment. They'll even come over and get your boat if you aren't there when they are ready. They did mine during the week and I didn't miss a day.
I liked the way they figured the water line by the way the boat sits in the water with full tanks and gear. They even added weight to the port side because the port tank was down about 30 gallons causing a slight list. Their years of practical experience make a difference I'm sure.
