Transom on my New (Used) 15 ft smokercraft Alaskan
I just bought a 1995 Smokercraft Alaskan. I have decided to buy a brand new 2006 Yami 25hp 4 stroke to put on the back. I am also looking to put a small 3-4 hp kicker. The transom is not very wide. Anyone run one of these boat with 25 hp 4-stroke and a small kicker? Trying to figure out if there is enough room for both. I will not have the new Yami 25hp put on until September but am looking at a couple of small kickers. Even if they will not fit, I can always use one of them on my 10 ft. livingston. I like the built in gas tank. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I have a 15 hp Honda 4 stroke on my 13 ft Gregor and it flys like a bat out of h e l l , Trolling is perfect for trout and salmon alike. 25 hp
is way more than you really need. But then again I have a 16 ft Starcraft with a 70 hp yami on it and it is down right scary at full throttle, with a 50 lb thrust electric Minn Kota doing the trolling.

I had a Bayrunner 15 footer with a 25 hp Evinrude (2 stroke). For a kicker, I used a 3.5 hp Tohatsu (also a 2 stroke). The setup worked fine. The 4 strokes are 50% heavier, so you need to watch the total weight.

Re: Transom on my New (Used) 15 ft smokercraft Alaskan
I have a 15' SVAW Smokercraft sled with a 25hp Merc and a 4.5 Evinrude kicker both 2 strokes. 600lbs in 3 guys, 2 fuel tanks and 2 batteries, + all the gear and it will run 22mph and over 27mph with just my wife and I. I do have to admit that I wish I had bought the 40hp on those long runs down Ruffus Woods to the net pens.

For what it's worth:
My father has the exact same set up. the yami. 25 4 stroke is the PERFECT motor for this boat. The 25 is so smooth, he trolls with his all day without so much as a sputter, so you may not necc. need a 3-4 hp. gas kicker. He does have an elec. motor he uses to troll extra slow for koke's. I hope this helps, and good choice on the new motor.

Most, if not all of the small single cylinder (which is what you'll find in that HP range) motors vibrate like crazy and are terrible to troll with when compared to a twin cylinder model. Save money, time and weight and just set it up so the main motor will troll well.

A friend of mine has either a 15' or 16' Alaskan that he takes in the ocean quite a bit. He's got 2 4-strokes on the transom. A 70hp main and a kicker (not sure what hp). Seems to work just fine, though last time out he said his console came loose when some of the rivets holding the console popped. He replaced them with screws. He runs that thing like a bat out of helll! Just hope he doesn't pop a rivet on the hull when he's 20 miles offshore!

He has had this boat for 12 year and picks his ocean-going days carefully. He's now looking to upgrade to a bigger boat and I sure as heck won't be posting his used Alaskan on ifish for him!

Re: Transom on my New (Used) 15 ft smokercraft Alaskan
to those of you that haven't fished from an alaskan, they are incredibly seaworthy for a small, open bow boat. as long as you don't go out in any crazy weather, they handle inshore ocean fishing very well. my 13 footer has made many a trip to sekiu and the columbia.
