Tuesday Depoe Bay report
The Pacific Lake was just that, today. A Lake! I called Willfish last evening to see if he wanted to join me for the run out today, and of course he was willing and able.
We left dock this morning about 5:45 with about a 215 degree heading, figuring on the 44 45 x 124 30 area to start fishing. Spoonplugger was on the same page, and heading out at the same time to the same area. There were at least a few other boats all heading in that general vicinity, some from Newport, and I believe it was just the 2 of us boats from Depoe.
There was good clean blue water, the water temp was 59 for much of the morning, with a couple of 60 degree small areas...then as the day progressed, the temp began to climb, up to the 62 degree range. For most of the morning, it was pretty much scratch fishing for all the boats in the area, with an occasional double or even a triple, then nothing for some people. Finally about noonish, the bite began to turn on and it seemed that most boats were getting into the fish.
Willfish and I were getting mostly singles, with an occasional double hook up. At one point, we hooked up a double on cedar plugs, and in the process I stupidly put the boat into neutral. We got the fish boated, and without paying enough attention, I put the boat back into gear. We had drifted out over the handlines, and a couple of handlines got wrapped into the props.
One dumb move by the captain and we're suddenly adrift hanging over the transom to unwrap Tuna Cord from the outdrive for an hour and a half that it took to clear the mess.
We finally got back underway and began hooking a few more fish.
We ended the day with 12 fish in the box, 4 or so long line release, and would have no doubt had several more had I not made that dumb mistake.
The fish were all a good grade of fish, with only 2 peanuts for us. Some boats had many more peanuts, but it sounded like everybody got most all the fish they wanted.
Area fished:
44 28-40 x 124 30 out to the 125 line. The bulk of fish seemed to be out in the 124 50+ range.
With that, I am off to catch some shut eye. Got fish to cark tomorrow.

Stuff happens, if it didn't we wouldn't learn from our mistakes. Sounds like a great day to me, even with the mishap.

Re: Tuesday Depoe Bay report
Really glad you got into some fish Nancy.
We also had our own prop situation 2 weeks ago, but it was with mono. We were sure glad it was not tough line !!
So glad it did not disable you and you managed to get it cleared out.
Go & get some rest--you deserve it!!

Re: Tuesday Depoe Bay report
We were out there too. A few miles south of you I believe. Heard some radio talk about trouble on your boat and a couple of dogs offering to help. Glad to hear it all worked out.
We ended up with 10. 2 I wouldn't even clasify as peanuts. They couldn't have weighed more than 5 or 6 lbs. Did get a couple that we estimated at 35 and 38. Total of 3 doubles, the rest singles. One got straffed by a shark on the way in. No meat lost.
We started about a mile west of the ranch and headed out to the 125 line where we finally found other boats and fish.
Very nice day on the pond as you mentioned.

Exactly! We did catch fish in closer that 124:50 but the majority came from the 50 to the 125 line. We were concentrating at latitude 44:35 to 44:38.
We were using blue and white yozuri squid with chrome heads and then later put on a couple of cedar plugs. They all seemed to work. Ended up with 27 in the box. 7 peanuts, 6 average and 14 pigs up to 33 pounds.
Nice fishing out there with you Nancy! Let's do it again asap.

Re: Tuesday Depoe Bay report
It was a nice ocean. we went out of depoe about 6:30. We ran out with a nother boat the (Kingfisher). we were out on 44.56. Found warm water starting at about 25 miles out. we ended up about 125 line. The water temp 64 degs, alot of bait probably to much bait. We found blue water at about 30 miles out. We ended up with 7 fish, several were those 5 to 6 lb fish. When we came in about 3:30 the other two boats had a bout the same. It was a good day to be on the water, but it sounds like we should have went south.

Brook, yes the Magic Cedar Plug was the hot ticket. It clearly had the first, and most hook ups of all of the gear deployed.
I have to give credit to Willfish too. He did most of the work in getting the cord out of the props. (Counter Rotating Duo-Props can REALLY wrap the cord up. ). He also brought a couple of home made daisy chain's that hooked up well. I was impressed with how well they worked, though they did catch our 2 peanuts!!
He also did an awesome job at cleaning the boat. For any other Skipper's out there who may be looking for a good crew, give Willfish a PM and get him out there fishing. He's been well broken in between last year and yesterday.

I must also thank you too, Jerry for being willing to stand by while we cleared the prop mess. Once again, the Salty Dog Credo came into play. Leave no dog behind, even if it's their own stupidity that put them there.
To all: Once I saw how bad it really was, I got on the radio and notified Spoonplugger, so he would be aware of our location and situation. Even though we weren't formally set up as 'buddy boats' it's always a good idea to keep track of each other out there.
