Default Deer forercast for 2008

Has any body heard how the deer faired this last winter I have not seen any thing. The OHA mag was all I have seen? Looking for Central Oregon???

After a surplus in north central Oregon in the year 2000-2002 range, the herd took a real big dive in the last 5 years or so. We skipped hunting last year. This summer I've been seeing better numbers!!!

Healthy antler growth!

Hope he trots one ranch over!!

I was out looking for bears again today out in White River Unit, got skunked like always. I did see 2 blacktail with huge racks. 5x5 and the other one look crazy I couldn't even count the points. Good thing is I got a tag for Oct.

I've never seeing so many bucks and good quality bucks. This is going to be a banner year. Only a few more weeks.

I saw the single largest mule deer on a ridge about 3-4 miles above the Deschutes last week that I have ever saw alive.

Put the spotting scope on it and it was with 2 other large bucks. Typical 4 point with large eye gaurds and the spread had to be pushing the high 20's to near 30" with height nearly equal to the spread. It had to be a near 200 animal. The 4 point ahead of it was very nice, but didn't have the mass and deeper forks that this toad had.

The wife wondered why I was getting so excited. Gave me the warm fuzzy's inside.

Saw a whole bunch of large threes and a couple nice forks along with your typical 1 1/2 year old spikes and forks. 4 -5 hours over three evenings driving and had to have seen nearly 2 dozen bucks.

It was cool.

Hey ehunter, I will give you the ODF&W forecast for Saddle Mt. deer. "Deer hunting should be good this year, lot's of bucks escaped harvest last year because the harvest was a record low!"

Honestly, I think the deer hunting might actually make a slight up tick this year. Seemed to be a few more deer out there and I have seen a fair number of bucks. Of coarse they won't be out in the clearcuts come rifle season.

Rank its said but true, a slight tick up is like a 150% improvement. I have not spent as much time out there this summer due to gas prices but I will let you know what we think when we start our hiking err hunting The few times I have been in area you know I have seen elk and lots of sign so I am not worried have not seen many deer on the hills well none twice driving in seen them in fields before the gate.

My area has seen a big drop in population since the late 90's and early 2000's. We were spoiled then. Many bucks were passed up.

My unit allotted;
1200 tags in the year 1999. 24" FORK
1054 tags in 2000. 26" 3x3
665 tags in 2004. 23" 3x3
568 tags in 2005. 24" 4x3
539 tags in 2006. Biggest buck!
540 tags in 2007. Skipped it.
545 tags in 2008. Can't wait!!

I hope what I'm seeing this year is the start of a great run again!!
