Update...
Welp, we made it out today. Dropped a few crab pots in the bay, then chose to hang out in the channel for bout an hour to let the tide finish running out. We tried for salmon for a few hours but nothing. The commercials were doing pretty good, most fishing 40-60 fathoms. We tried getting down that deep but couldn't.
Learned the importance of replacing older downrigger cable. Either do it cuz you should, or do it cuz you have to...
Moved on to some bottom fishing. Ended up with a nice ling, a huge cabezon, and a bunch of Sea Bass. My buddy who's fished salmon offshore all his life but had never bottom fished, caught all the 'cool' fish, I was Mr. Sea Bass. He lost two monsters, we are assuming they were King Lings but we don't really know.
Learned about why light tackle isn't always the best idea when bottom fishing.
Needless to say, we now have another bottom fisher in our midst. "Where has this been all my life?".....mmmmm, the other white meat.
Headed home, pulled out pots...did I mention how much red rock crabs annoy me? Not a single legal dungy.
Bonus catch of the day, one large glass float still in it's net (along with about two pounds of little tube worm looking things) and one small glass float. Oh, and one slightly sunburnt neck...
In keeping with tradition, I'll end my post with yet another question...
What does it take to fish kings recreationally at 300'? My guess is, DON'T! Bottom fish till they come in closer!
