Proof CR ocean could close sunday night
Little bird says get your fish while you can because the CR ocean quota will supposedly be met by Sunday and close Sunday night. For those of you that had vacations the last two weeks of August this is your reward. Learn to fish the estuary and catch nooks. They will meet tomorrow and I don't see any quota coming from Westport or down south to fill the void. That's all folks. Fun while it lasted.

ODFW Notice: Cape Falcon to OR/CA Border Coho set to close
This is for CAPE FALCON and SOUTH. It does not pertain to the CR AREA
8/12/08 ACTION NOTICE: NOAA Fisheries in consultation with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, representatives from the recreational and commercial Oregon salmon fisheries, and the Pacific Fishery Management Council, has taken in-season action to close the recreational ocean salmon fishery in the area from Cape Falcon to the Oregon/California.
ACTION TAKEN: The recreational ocean salmon fishery between Cape Falcon and the Oregon/California Border closes to all salmon fishing effective 11:59 PM Thursday, August 14.
RATIONALE: The recreational ocean salmon fishery between Cape Falcon and the Oregon/California Border opened for fin-clipped coho retention on June 22nd with a quota of 9,000 coho. Through August 3, landings had progressed at an average of 8% of the quota per week with total landings of 5,342 coho (59% of quota) landed by August 3. During the week of August 4-10, effort and catch accelerated over the weekend, and brought total landings to 8,462 coho by Sunday evening (94% of quota). Weekday catches are currently estimated to average 300 coho per day which will result in the quota being entirely caught by Tuesday, August 12. In order to provide adequate notice of the season closure to the recreational fishing community, the season will close on Thursday night.

Terrific, and as soon as they close the bottom fish we have one of the largest Marine Reserves in the world, (Nearshore Fishing Coastal Oregon Waters)

Re: CR ocean will close Thursday
I believe it, as fishing has been good all year for us. Fished yesterday with 3 newbies and had fish on continually. We were off 1 and counted at least 50 boats in sight with several big charters in the mix. If most were doing as well as we did that's a fair amount of fish. Also heard of limits coming from around the CR as well. Too bad as I hate the combat fishing that buoy 10 has become. May just be tuna and halibut for me.

The decision on the Columbia River area (Leadbetter Point to Cape Falcon) has not been made at this time. There is a conference call scheduled for 1:00 PM on Wednesday to discuss options. The south of Cape Falcon fishery was decided today as shown in the action notices quoted above.

Re: CR ocean will close Thursday
Word is with respect Chum King that this is a given that it will close and I am aware of your meeting tomorrow. Option is to close it Sunday night. I hope I am wrong but I don't think so.
Pete, thank you for your correction as I had read it wrong.
Chum King I am looking forward to your report tomorrow. Thanks for your response and all you do for us. I say that with sincerity

Re: CR ocean will close Thursday
Pete,
Why did my thread get lumped with Bernie's? My thread was Cape Falcon SOUTH to OR/CA. Bernie was talking about Cape Falcon NORTH...
All,
Sorry for any confusion, but I did not post #2 in this thread, it was moved here by the mods. I started a new thread for Garibaldi and South. I did not mean to imply that the CR area was closed.

Re: CR ocean will close Thursday
Where do you guys get this information, it sure isn't posted at ODFW.
Correct me if I am wrong but:
Cape Falcon South Closed to all salmon fishing.
Soon all bottom fishing will be closed.
And North of Cape Falcon will be closed.
What's a salty dog to do ????
Halibut anyone ?

Yep, when a conference call is scheduled most likely it's gonna happen.
34, you will now learn to fish the river. I'll send ya a few pointers if ya want. The 23 most likely will not happen but of course I'm not always right.

Re: CR ocean will close sunday night
Ocean Salmon Management Program - Action Notices/Updates
8/13/08 ACTION NOTICE: NOAA Fisheries in consultation with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, representatives from the commercial troll fishery, and the Pacific Fishery Management Council, has taken in-season action to modify the commercial troll salmon fishery in the area from the US/Canada Border to Cape Falcon.
ACTION TAKEN: The rule restricting gear to plugs six inches or larger is removed effective Saturday, August 16.
RATIONALE: The gear restriction was originally added to insure that commercial catches of coho would not outpace the chinook catches. At this point in time the coho landings have been slower than chinook, and the troll industry has expressed concern that they are unable to effectively catch chinook with the 6 inch plug requirement. By removing the plug requirement the fishery is expected to continue in an orderly manner. Although discussed, no changes were made to either the open days or open period landing limits.
Was this what the call was about today or have they not posted the closing yet?

Re: CR ocean will close sunday night
According to the following, we are only at 77% of the quota as of last week. Thereofore we should have a little over 2200 fish available in our quota at the start of fishing last Sunday (where south of Cape Falcon was at 94% of their quota):
http://www.dfw.state.or.us/MRP/salmo...ing/nofspt.asp
Best I can estimate, about 1500 fish are being caught for each of the last couple weeks. So it seems like there should be enough quota to fish into next week. Particularily if some of the effort has shifted to buoy 10.
Anxiously waiting official word from the ODFW.

Re: CR ocean will close sunday night
It's just your dryer and it only eats your socks...there's a metaphor in that...somewhere.
I've heard no talk of closing off the CR mouth other than the always-accurate Internet.
Sure they're close to quota, but no one here (well, maybe a lurker or someone) is making the decision for them.

Well, it appears that the rumor could actually be correct ladies and germs.
Take a look at this article and you will notice about a little more than halfway through Ilwaco is mentioned and a possible closure. Oh mighty crystal ball my foot.

Newspapers verify one thing. When wrapped around a fish it will tell you that the fish is dead and that you actually caught one.

I can always use pointers...for sure. (PM)
If you want to save fuel, ride a long with us Fri or Sat....I'm game.
We're going to charter Thursday, then fish like heck on the Baidarka Friday and Saturday. Sounds like it'll be heating up nice by then plus buts will be open offshore, should clean a few boats out.

fish have been around all along. They are where you find them.
And the swammi has spoken. She closes at 2pm Sunday afternoon. Fortunate it made it this long. Be thankful they were able to streach the season until now. No way did I think 10,000 coho and 5,ooo nooks would make it this far. I think ODFW did a good job keeping folks on the water.

I suspect a sloppy ocean contributed as much as ODFW & lets not forget the price of fuel.
