boy, I'd HATE to have your problem. I'd just love to get out there, but the boat is just a little small for most of it. Have fun out there.

From the forecast it looks like tommorrow's going to be the day to go, to bad I can't sneak out of work :depressed: Maybe a Sturg trip first thing Saturday morning and then a peak at the ocean before heading in.......

TC, any size to 'em yet, or mostly the 10-15lb feeders?

Hey Diamondback, You fish sturgeon in Coos Bay? I'd like to become educated on this someday. Granted, this isn't offshore stuff, so if you could private message me where you go and what you use, I'd be most gracious!

I don't want Mel beating me up anymore

MY,
This will be my first trip Sturg fishing on C-bay (I only THINK I know what I'm doing), so hopefully some of the long time residents like TC could chime in and give you (and me)some pointers. I've fished T-bay a lot, and I figure the techniques/gear can't be a whole lot different, but what do I know. I'm going to try from the RR bridge up to the casino on the edges of the mud flats (shallow water) W/ mostly sandshrimp.

As for the ocean it's flat as a pancake out there now. I hope it stays for the weekend and halibut here soon. I'm not sure of the size of the fish, but usually they are the 10-25 lb variety. I know last year a guy got a 43 lber in May. I'm pretty torn on the ocean or the rogue this weekend. Might come down to what time I have to get up in the morning.

As of the sturgeon fishing don't waste time around the RR bridge. Fish are commonly caught at the bridge by the Hiltop Resteraunt. A lot of perch in there also. The other standby area is by the NB bridge upriver and in the triangle area. I've caught fish in all of those areas but when the critters are around it's pretty hard to keep a bait down. Sandshrimp or mudshrimp are the best choices. Occassionally it can be outstanding (one day we landed 12 with no other boats around) and other days the crabs and sculpin rob your bait before it hits bottom. Fish in 10' of water also.

I was talking to the guys at Englund's today and they said the same thing. Said they were catching them in 40-60 fathoms. I asked to clarify if he meant the water was 40-60 fathoms or they had their rigs at 40-60 (sometimes people will just say "go out to 200', that's where the fish are", when they actually mean go to 200' and fish at 60') Well, he said their rigs are running in 40-60 fathoms. Does that sound right? yeepers, that's deep!

On another note, Englund's a little gadget that supposedly prevents you from having to pull your cannonball up if you pop off. Apparently, it works like a planer. You attach it to your cable and it dives down you're cable to a pre-set stop. When you pop-off, it planes back up. Just hook it back onto your cable and down it goes again. Dunno if you'd want to leave your weight down if you pop-off cuz of a fish, but it'd be kinda nice if if it was just one of those "@#$%^^'it, it popped off!" scenarios.

Anyone seen or used these?

Mellow - I've seen em advertised but not used one. I believe you can also use them to stack. Put a clamp stop wherever you want above the ball and then just let it down the line after you get the ball and the deep rig set. If you get one (or two) I'd like to know what you think. I'm interested.

Mello Yellow: I have used a "planer" like that on the downrigger wire fishing for kokanee. It would need to be larger for salmon though. It worked good except if you put too much bend in the rod (too much upward pull) it would slide back up the line and not stay at the stop on the downrigger wire.

TT.. This was the day to go out of Winchester. Passing by the lookout on 101 there were private and commercials fishing less then 1 mile from shore in great water. Could be for only one type SALMON.

Was on the way to pick up a 20 Seaswirl striper I/O. Once I get it set up their poplulation will decline

Default Hot bite in the Ocean

My dad was down at Charleston this morning and commercial boats are coming down far and wide for the salmon bite that's happening out here right now. I've been out of the loop since this week and I guess boats are coming in with 80-100 fish daily. Such a choice, springers on the rogue and umpqua, salmon in the ocean, sturgeon in the bay, or bottomfishing. Rough life living on the coast I tell ya.
