John says that barbless doubles run about $35.00 for 25 hooks. Anyone wanna split that order with Bait Boy?

Have John check on the hoochies for the "ling killer" jig that he showed pics of last year.
Thanks again,

If the offer is still open - Please put me in for 10 barbless.
I don't know about long-line clips, mostly cause I don't know what they even is.

edsr - I'll let him know.
The longline clips look sorta like giant safety pins. I'm sure Pilar will show and tell on Friday. I've seen the clips, but I don't recall seeing them in action.

Re: Closed... Pilar on his way back now
John's gonna look into some small versions of tuna feathers/clones. When I was in CA, every shop told me they did exceptionally well on the smaller gear last year. I did pick up one hex-head clone while there, but I'll tell ya, they cost as much as the full-sized ones!

Re: Closed... Pilar on his way back now
I did well on homemade "feathers" last year. A large Octopus Hoochi slid over 2 -1 oz egg sinkers. Use beads between the sinkers and the hook to space the hook back to the rear of the skirt. All my hand line fish came on these. The rest were on poles with cedar plugs waaayy back.
They are smaller than a regular feather set up, esp. the cross section in the water. Maybe that's why they liked em? I dunno but a I have yet to catch a fish on these fancy $25 dollar feathers with the plastic heads I bought (there a small version of a Marlin lure basically).
There cheap, quick and easy and hoochies/skirts come in a Bazillion colors! If I get chance I'll bring some to the gearhead session!

PeterMac, I think we can cover you.
Corrirod/Casey: He's got the circle hooks covered. Have you checked the Fisherman's Marine at Delta Park for the hoochies? I seem to remember seeing some last fall. OC store didn't seem to have as good a selection of saltwater gear last time I was there.
Giz: Sure thing. Do you know if he was sucessful in actually getting out of the store yet?

Longline Clips? What use would one have for longline clips? I use them to add a bit more weight to my (sinking) crab line. I might even have 6 or so extra in the barn  if someone needs one or two.

Holy moly Keta. I guess we should know by now that we oughta check with you before purchasing anything from a store.
Tell ya what? Here's something for you to do: Take inventory of everything in that barn, categorize it and post it here for us. No telling what we could use. ... or what we might be able to create

Re: Closed... Pilar on his way back now
I should not be allowed to visit that place unattended or without adult supervision.
It was not enough to get some fishing tackle ... but more on the solutions to long term boat problems later, after the installation work
I have a box of 100 16/0 circles, a box of 50 tuna barbless doubles, 20 glow hootchies in salmon sizes, a dozen Zukers in some styles and colors I did not know existed, longline clips for weighted crab trap lines, 200# Ande mono, handline cord, and, and, and, ...
Should I swivel the 16/0 circles for whoever wants them? This requires a vice and a pounding utensil ..
Story at Englunds. The sales associate was my best buddy while I was spending money. He followed me everywhere, helping like...
After checkout and post partum depression set in on my money ... I suggested he advertise on Ifish as only the Salty Dogs are likely to even know about Englunds or go there.
'Oh.....' and his demeanor changed completely. He turned and went for one last detail of the order. When he came back, not smiling, total change of attitude, He said ... 'I couldn't use that site for advertising ... too much anti Gillnet hysteria and anti commercial fishing attitude. And besides that's the problem with you sport fishers, you don't realize how many fish we produce for you to catch.'
So the message is being received. Englunds is in large part in business to supply commercial fishing. They like sport fishers to spend their money. But they percieve Ifish as messing with their rice bowl.
This was perhaps the most interesting part of the whole day.

Re: Closed... Pilar on his way back now
Can't blame them, they are in business to sell fishing gear to anyone who has cold cash or good credit.
Must be lurkers (or stealth members) working there. They probably get an earful from some of the commercial interest lurkers as well.
They do have a lot of feathers don't they I love the bulk packs. Gotta take a second loan out on the house for them though - ouch. Too bad you can't get a bulk pack with about a 4 of every color assortment.
You should try being docked all summer/fall only a 10 minute car ride from there. The only good thing is a)they close early on Sat and are not open on Sunday and b) I don't drive by there n the way (I use 26/Seaside)- otherwise I'd need a restraining order on myself!

Re: Closed... Pilar on his way back now
Mel, with 10 you get eggroll. Zukers are now up to $8.75 for each or $82 for 10. I worked em a little with the bulk buy angle and got an assortment for the 10 pack price.
New colors include black/purple broomtail and rootbeer broomtail as well as the tried and true green/yellow and green/yellow/white.
I managed to walk away from the handline bite-bells. These go ding when you pull the lever for $29 each. One is not bad but I would need at least 3 as I fish with handlines all the time. This is on the list for next time.

Re: Closed... Pilar on his way back now
Stump time! I think the sales rep's attitude is a little short-sighted. At Englunds in Newport, they sell an awful lot to sport fishers. Sure, not as much as to commercials. But at the rate things have been going, someday they may not have enough commercial fishing business to sustain them, while sportfishing continues to grow. Furthermore, I'd like to think that it's not so much the heavy-duty ocean sportfishers (as a group) who may be "bashing gillnetters". Too bad they feel they must "take sides" instead of embracing all fishermen & women.
Off stump.

Re: Closed... Pilar on his way back now
The bag limit on hats is one on your head at once. I think the sales rep I talked to was exceeding the bag limit on hats. He was wearing his part time job hat (gillnetter or related to gillnetter or rice bowl engraved w/ 'gillnetter') at the same time he was doing his day job and wearing that hat.
'We produce fish for you guys' was agitprop for "we gillnetters produce fish for you guys".
I guess if you spew the BS long enough, you begin to believe it. As has been researched by some of our curious members of ifish there is no provision in the Mitchell act linking hatchery production to gill net fishing in the Columbia river. It can be argued that these guys showed up at meetings and lobbied congress for funds but that was not an act of altruism on their part.
They ( Gillnetters association ) would like you (Sportfishers) to believe this propaganda that without them, fishing as we know it would end and without their economic contribution, the coast of Oregon and Washington and the small towns on the lower Columbia River would dry up and blow away. Well, not in Forks or Raymond anyway, rains too much there.
Why not, our elected officials believe it in the face of much evidence to the contrary.

Re: Closed... Pilar on his way back now
And They (Englund's) don't understand the impact of the sport fishers on the economy - that they have an untapped market. They (Englund's) think that if they start to "get in bed" with ifishers, the Commercials will be angry with them and take their business elsewhere.
They (gill netters) are scared of sport fishers because They (gill netters) are losing their grip on any rationale to continue to do what they do.

Re: Closed... Pilar on his way back now
I understand your point Mel. But on the other hand, Englunds will be stocking the stuff we buy regardless of what happens to the nets.
All I know is everyone who owns there own business should always be evaluating the future direction of their company. Adaptation is the key to survival. When the nets are gone I'll bet Pilar gets treated a little differently!

Re: Closed... Pilar on his way back now
Um...knowing the Englund's and being a frequent purchaser, they have continued to enlarge their sportfishing section, but make no mistake, they began with commercial fishing and will probably always be oriented that way.
Gillnetting is a minute portion of the commericial fishing they deal with. You still have crabbing gear, shrimping gear, sardine seines, trawl nets, troll gear, longline gear, blackcod pot gear to name just a few. The named fisheries dwarf and I mean dwarf gillnetting.
Please realize that businesses on the coast DO rely on local money and jobs most of the year. Sporadic seasonal recreational fishing seasons only make up a part of their business.

Re: Closed... Pilar on his way back now
Don't disagree at all about the net business folks. There are plenty of other commercial customers out there too, not all of them are even fisherman. Englunds is not a tackle store, they are a Chandelry who has some tackle (just happens to be some we are interested in).
I just don't want to see Englunds turn the way FMS did. FMS used to be the premier tackle store. Then they decided to go for the "sportsman" market and the GI Joes look. Nice place to shop for clothes now (maybe).
Bottom line is that the sportfishing tackle retail bus is a low margin, high volume cutthroat business. I really don't believe that Englunds could stay open in Astoria, Newport or any other small coastal community without catering to the commercial customer base. So... be careful what you ask for!

Re: Closed... Pilar on his way back now
I love Englund Marine. I have always received excellent service at both Newport and Astoria. Their prices are good and their inventory is better than Fishermans Marine ever dreamed.
Nothing burns my bottom more than to drive 70 miles to find half empty shelves and a constantly rearranged store. The last time I was there I even had the help leading me in circles around the store in search of tuna gear. When we finally found the stuff it was in a pile.
I think your right about too many hats. In customer service one has to remember which hat he is wearing.
I wonder if he has been to Ifish or has formed an opinion from gossip. I don't see a lot of anti commercial fishing posts. What I see is a genuine concern over one particular method of commercial fishing.
I would just like for them all to step out of their Extra Tuffs and Grundens long enough to see the irresponsibility of some of the methods used. When you make your living from a public resource you shouldn't snivel when the public asks you do it with integrity.
I for one am not anti commercial fishing and I know for a fact that Pilar isn't either. We have discussed this viewpoint more than once at ODFW meetings when we were involved with the offshore issue.
I understand his concern about advertising here and the perception his bread and butter customers might have. What I don't understand is his degenerative attitude towards a customer simply because he mentioned an affiliation with a web site.

Pilar - next trip I'm just tying the handlines to the deck crew. Keeps them awake and out of the cabin! No monitary cost involved either!
Hmmm.... now where to put that knot

Re: Closed... Pilar on his way back now
I wonder if the owner of Englund Marine has this attitude? Sounds like they need a marketing consultant. I've always wondered why they don't attempt to gain more sport fishing marketshare. With a little reorganization they could own that business thru-out the entire NW.
I certainly wouldn't be banking on gillnet sales to support me in the future.

Re: Closed... Pilar on his way back now
Rod - I think just the opposite. They "own" most of the commercial business in their local and there is intense competion (note I did not say quality competion) in the sports market. Larry tried the "corner the sport" market approach. The catalog/web order bus really hurts, a small tackle store owner/guide once told me they were tackle "ladies of the night" (use your imagination as to what he really said).
We salties like Englunds because we use a lot of the stuff the commercial guys use, big, tuff, quality tackle. I think we're getting a deal cause the commercial business supports their ability to stock the stuff we want. If it wasn't for the commercial bus. it would look like GI Joes or FMS.
