Friday 8/8 Newport Tuna
I haven't even rinsed the rods & cleaned up yet, but wanted to get a quick report to the tuna crazies who are going out tomorrow.
Was out with Glen (A. Genius); 3 of us total in the boat. Caught all we wanted and quit at noon.
Started at 44 19 X 125 05. Stayed within about a 1 mile radius of there. Left biting fish that were attacking the boat.
Guys were getting good action SW of us, W of us, and NE of us. Lots of tuna for lots of boats today.
AND there were some fish caught way inside of us....a handful. Not the wide-open bite but fish can be had around the chicken ranch.
Thank you to Dick Pickett and Scott Armstrong for the info over the last few days.
And thank you Glen !
G'nite!

Re: Friday 8/8 Newport Tuna
My pleasure Mark, as always best of times fishing with my best fishing buddies. 2 fish on less than 30 sec after throwing in the gear was just icing on the cake.

Re: Friday 8/8 Newport Tuna
Thanks to whoever (assuming it was one of the dogs) was giving up radio fish SW of the ranch. We picked up our 5 butts and boated 5 tuners. With the pond a little dicey by noon, we might have turned back if it wasn't for the generosity. Three people got splattered for the first time thanks to you.....

Re: Friday 8/8 Newport Tuna
It's a nice feeling when......you have been calling someone on the radio...they don't respond...you hope & assume it is because they are very busy catching fish.....and when you finally catch up with them they tell you "yes I was very busy catching fish."
(versus..they don't respond because of all the other possible reasons )

Re: Friday 8/8 Newport Tuna
Finally got the Skunk off today, fished in a friends Boat from Florence ran to 44 09 125 02, just past Heceta, hooked up right away, doubles, triples, fast & furious to start, slowed to just singles the last couple hours, the wind picked up early afternoon, & the bite slowed to scratch fishing, by then we were running low on ice, ran as far as 44 15 125 05, most boats fishing the area got all they wanted also, the ones that fished in further in had smaller #'s, might give another try Sun.

Re: Friday 8/8 Newport Tuna
Four people on our boat today, of which one caught his first ever tuna. We caught at least a dozen on iron and a spinning set-up, what fun.
Our humpback whale experience was one of a lifetime. He circled our boat several times no more than 20 feet away blowing his smelly breath on us several times. Then he would stop and roll on his side with his huge fin out of the water. Disappeared for a while and then his tale emerged and we saw that his head was under the boat and it appeared he was checking out our hull. Unreal experience. He submerged and we took off outta there. Derek on the boat got a full video of the happening and then of several of the humpback's breaching. There were about 10 to 12 it appeared in the vicinity. It all happened about 35 miles out of Depoe toward SW tip of Heceta Bank.
Back to the tuna...it was some of the best ever had. Lots of multiples. We were forced to quit from the shear numbers. Magic spot for us was 44:20 X 125:10 just on top the drop-off.

Re: Friday 8/8 Newport Tuna
Mark, nice to meet you and Glen at the cleaning station yesterday. I put that tuna loin to good use last night with a little wasabi and soy sauce.
Thanks a million!

Really cool. He was probably checking to make sure you weren't a baitball.
