Default Whole squid for Halibut bait

Hi:

I have had good luck using cut squid as bait for bottom fish in the past. Has anybody had any luck using whole squid for Halibut? Squid is a good tough baitfor bottom fish, it stays on the hook and the fish tend to bite it quite often.

Works excellent Tady! Definately stays on the hook and has a distinct smell.

Tady & Corrirod - Where are you guys getting good squid - how about octopus? Did you know that squid is almost all cholesterol? No wonder fish that eat them put on weight quickly.

I've also found squid at the supermarket occassionally in bulk packs. They definitely stay on the hook really well for getting a second chance at the fish.

We use whole squid almost exclusively for Oregon Hali. run the circle hook through the tough part of the head and then out of the mouth so that it is dangling with the tenticles. A couple of half-hitches of line around the tip of the head and it will stay on and on and on... No more reeling up 500' to check bait... It seems to equal other baits or outfish other baits on our boat most days. Check the supermarket if you can't find squid at the bait shop. Also on the way out let it thaw in a baggie with some "scent" in it. I won't use hardly anything else at the ranch.

California market squid, (the small ones), and giant squid, can be easily purchased at any Asian grocery.

About 6 years ago while I was living in So. Cal., I sent 10 cases of frozen giant squid to the Alaskan charter outfit that I always used when I was up there, Rod n' Reel. Randy and Rod reported back that it didn't do well early in the season, but later in the summer it worked great.

In the 2 years I've been here and haved fished Neah Bay, I have used both types of squid and found that they have produced the same as herring, mackeral and white leadheads with white scampi tails. I will continue to include it in my arsenal.
