Default Looks like the Eastside got hit hard.

http://www.nwccweb.us/content/produc...RNINGBRIEF.pdf

Can't really tell if they have any out of control, but there will surely be more fires popping up.

I always worry about the perfect storm scenario when we have high winds and a week of 1,000 lightning strikes per day. Resources would just be overwhelmed.

There have always been fires in those areas but the more we supress them and we have to now the more fuel there is to burn.

I just came from a drive about 15 miles west of Burns/Hines towards Yellowjacket Lake. A new fire burning very hot there, and heard the fighters have just been pulled off it. I guess it started with the lightning yesterday. Quite the column of smoke visible from here in town. For those of you who know of our fire situation last year, this one is to the north of it, in the Skull Creek area.

There is a lot of good grass this year, including last year's burn area. The fire right now is in juniper and sage, burning toward town, so no timber in between. In fact, not much timber unless it moves north towards those drainages.

Went on a scout trip the other evening north of town and had grass along the roadsides higher than my hood. VERY green in the hills, but obviously very dry, too. (The paradox we live with!)

We are in a rock and a hard place with the Juniper/Sage Steppe. With cheat grass the fire regime has changed from 15-20 years to 4 to 5 year. We need fire but it only helps the cheat grass which makes the fire worse. I am not sure there is a solution.

I'm telling you what. I have NEVER seen such a thunder and lightning storm like I am seeing over Coeur D'Alene Lake right now. Out my hotel balcony, I see 180 degrees of storm. Above, far, right and left. OMG!!!

Strikes, lake lit up, I swear my shadow is blazened forever on the stucco side!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But, it's very WET! Thank God for the forests around here.

My hunting partner from Canyon City said there was ash falling in town Friday afternoon and could see two different columns of smoke to the south. He thought one fire might be up the East Fork Canyon Creek, maybe in the wilderness? The second smoke might be up on Starr Ridge somewhere?

There is a fire 15 miles N of Prarie City at 130 acres but it's 65% contained as of this morning.

Just got back a couple days ago from a family campout at the Deschutes Rec area.

Thursday night and Friday morning were pretty active. Sat under a tree during one lightening storm that caused a nice downpour. Had to get out of the water a few times from fear of being shocked and rocked.

A lot of the area the sheep hang out in around Jones Canyon and Beavertail Campgrounds on the Deschutes burned Thursday and Friday. Don't know where the sheep moved to, but will be a little harder for the West Side hunters to find sheep as this area was a gimmee for shootable rams in the past. The ones we were looking at either swam the river or headed down river. Thought we had them pinned down for a buddy, but now it's more glassing and looking to see if we can find them.
