Default Favorite Salty Dog related websites

I've sent Id. Painter a couple emails with my favorite websites for Ocean forecasting/SST's, along with explanations of how I use them. I was wondering if anyone else, perhaps some of the tuna newbies, would like me to copy them on these emails?

These are sites that almost all of the "experienced" tuna hunters on this site use so they are not a big secret or anything. So it's really directed at the new oceangoers only, or those getting ready for their first tuna season.

If you'd like a copy just send me an email and I'll add you to the list.

A couple of favorite TUNA fishing web sites:

http://www.bctfa.com/handling.htm

http://www.wfoa-tuna.org/page.asp?ObjectID=87

http://www.wfoa-tuna.org/page.asp?ObjectID=89

http://www.wfoa-tuna.org/page.asp?ObjectID=149

These sites are geared to the commercial TUNA fishing industry out
of Washington, but there is some really good info to be found here
about things like how to run your lines, preperation of tuna for the
table and how to keep fresh tuna on your boat.

Hope this helps ...

Rod,

I'm not a newbie to TUNA fishing, but find I can learn a *lot* from
stuff on the web ... but I don't always know where to look! Would you
consider posting your web finds to this thread? Pretty please?

Thanks,

Does anyone know of a site that has good, printable water surface temperature charts for the WA & OR coasts? Ideally they would be updated daily.

O.k. I'll post them here but I'll need a little time to put them together. The only reason I didn't post them here is because I wanted to explain how I use them to the folks that might be new to ocean travel.

For instance, the SST's(Sea Surface Temp) maps. I have about 3-4 different sites that I use, and everyone uses, in order to find out where the warm water is. The target water is 57-61 degrees F and the objective is to find a tight seam where it goes from cold to warm very quickly.

For anyone new to Tuna fishing, it is these maps that will decide whether we think the tuna are within range.

Something to know about the SST's is that they are effected by cloud cover. Thus the reason why I use multiple sites. Some of the sites I use are very generic and can cover several days. They are not good for exact warm water locations but they give me a good idea where the warm water might be when cloud cover has messed up the good SST's.

I advised I.D. that he should perhaps check out an SST in southern California to get an idea of how the good SST's work when there are no clouds.

Here are the sites I use for SST's:

Coast Watch:
Coastwatch Link
This site you will need to click on the "eye" icon, then if it asks for a a username or password type images and typhoon(I can't remember which is the the username and which is the password so reverse them if it's wrong, I have it stored in my "AutoComplete" so I don't have to type it in anymore) Once you type that in it should take you to a satellite image of the western U.S. Point/click your mouse in the vicinity of Oregon, or wherever you want to see the SST and BLAM you're there.

Next site is Terrafin. This link is to the "free" area. They have a pay service which runs about $95/year but I don't subscribe. This gives you a very detailed map but is not always updated.
Terrafin Link

Now we move to more generic sites. The next site is one that has some decent warm water resolution but it usually covers several days and is sometimes very out-of-date.
Link #3

Lastly, this site is very generic. It is kept up-to-date fairly well but is so generic that it is usually a last resort.
Link #4

Now you see why I was inclined not to post it here. Bla, bla, bla, bla..............

I'll post the rest with explanations when my fingers recover.......

TTT. Since I raised the Weather Forecasting thread I figured this one goes hand in hand with it too.
