Default Yellowjacket/Hornet Report Needed!!

Looking for the YJ/Hornet report for the Northside and Heppner units. So far on the westside, it looks like we don't have many yet. Last year in the cascades was terrible for me, and I'm just curious what everyone else has been seeing.

Thanks,

Aaron

Aaron...I haven't seen a single skumbag in the Mt Hood or White River country yet. Been working at times up the Molalla not too far from the Ogle Mtn mine and found a few nests last week in that area.

My hunting partner hasn't seen any skumbags in the John Day area either.

Went with a guy to the Starkey area two weeks ago and helped him hang some treestands, only saw 2 or 3 up there.

You going to hunt the ***** Mtn area again this year?

I was an exterminator for 7 years, and my former employer is still one of my best hunting buddies.

The cool wet spring caused a lot of the quens to get a late start. The same amount of nests are probably out there, there are just smaller than normal for this time of year. My exterminator buddy is way down on jobs for this year.

That said, a nest will produce exponentially, so they will continue to grow thru bow season. They will get worse. The good news, is that nests will not be as big at the end of the cycle, so they will not raise as many queens to start nests next year.

AFYI: Hornets are technically the subtype of yellowjacket that build covered aerial nests that you see under eaves, on branches of trees, etc, and typically eat live insects only.

It is the species that hide their nests in stumps, the ground, etc that scavenge and bother campers and hunters.

Was out scouting around the Paulina Unit today. Two years ago they were so bad you couldn't even breathe because they were swarming your face.

Today, didn't see one. Not as far East as you were wanting, but it is a report nonetheless.

recent scouting trip near Ukiah proved that there are several around. One sting under my arm. Bugger just flew into my arm pit as I lowered my arm. they are out there and they seem to be multiplying.
Not nearly as bad as some years.
