Re: Saturday might be a good OCEAN day
Hey there!! Myself and a couple of other guys are sure going to give it try on Saturday. We should hit the ramp at Newport about 7:00 am. We would love to hook up with any other Ifishers that are heading that way.

Re: Saturday might be a good OCEAN day
I've got 3 shrimp pots ready to go with 400' of rope and want to try them at the rock pile.
Only one problem tho, my boat won't have it's finished coat of paint by then.
If someone is going out and has room for one more please let me know.

Re: Saturday might be a good OCEAN day
I have a full boat this time. But I am looking to do a lot of fishin this year. So I will certainly have open seats. I live in corvallis so most of my fishing will be at Newport.
However I am always open to fishing new places for new fish. I am reading a lot about "springers". I have never fished for salmon in the rivers or for stellhead.
Because of this website I have learned to sturgeon fish this year. I went four times and had two keepers. So I am on a learning curve.
I guess what I am trying to say is e-mail me and we can set up a trip. I have a new 18 footer. Love the heater!!!!! I usually fish with one friend so that leaves at least two open seats.
so drop me an e-mail in the next couple of weeks and we can go fishing.

Re: Saturday might be a good OCEAN day
Too big for me yet.
I will be monitoring for any change.
I have a long weekend. Thurs,Fri,Sat,Sun. Back to work Monday night at 8:00pm.
If Blue doesn't lay down I may be forced to fish a nasty hogline for a springer.

I am patiently waiting for numbers under 10 and a period over 10.
It's coming and in the mean time there are Salmon in the river looking for a trip to my BBQ .

Now it says 7 ft combined. That must be a typo, right?

Re: Saturday might be a good OCEAN day
That has to be a typo, 25kt winds and 7 foot combined seas don't sound right. For a moment there I thought there would be a chance to get out this weekend. The forecast usually updates around 3:30 PM, check again later.

Re: Saturday might be a good OCEAN day
Need some Newbie information here.
I know what 8ft high means and that waves come in intervals but when does it get safe? When does it get comfortable? The two don't always come together.
Where does this information come from, that is, who publishes it and where can I find it?

Re: Saturday might be a good OCEAN day
Ed,
For a dory off the beach at PC, you probably don't want to look at
more than 6ft swell at 10 seconds. Out of port you could go 10ft
at 8 seconds if you're brave. The BIG thing you want to watch is the
wind and "wind waves". Wind waves are white caps. In a dory, the wind
will push you along a LOT. Flat bottom boats have absolutly NO holding
power against the wind in anything over 15mph, and will still slip down
wind in even a 15mph blow.
I've had times when I was trolling Cod where I would slip as much
as a quarter mile off my spot while making a turn with the side of the
boat to the wind. You'll also find that trolling into the wind is hard
because the wind will catch the front of the boat and swing you around.
Makes you have to be "on the wheel" almost constantly.
Uhh, you'll also be *very* uncomfortable running your boat in the wind
waves - chop - white caps. The bottom of your feet will feel like
somebody has been pounding them with a fish club by the end of the day!
Let me tell you about running in from the tuna grounds, being pounded
the whole way in a flat bottomed boat!!
The nice thing about a dory, however, is that when the ocean conditions
are right ... they are fast and comfortable. They are also SOOOOO
seaworthy! (IMHO)
Have a TON of fun with your new boat!

Re: Saturday might be a good OCEAN day
We have been out on the Ocean with a 3 and 5 at 10, 15 knot wind prediction, and it turned out to be like 0 and 2 at 12, with no wind at all.
Like Kurt said above, they are "predicting" the worst possible conditions. I have found that they will most always miss on the side of caution.
Puffin has fished on big blue so many times, he can almost predict what kind of day we are going to have, just by smelling the morning air. And having a peek at what she is doing.
Above all, my friends, Safety is paramount. Do not go if you are not 100% sure you can make it back.
Peace, Tom

Re: Saturday might be a good OCEAN day
The "BLACK ROCKET" is poised for some week-end action, but I'm inclined to agree with the fish assassin. Might be an excellent "tune up week-end". If it lays down I'm there.

Re: Saturday might be a good OCEAN day
The 2:30 report still says 7 ft combined for Sunday. Have any of you fished Chinook out of Garibaldi in April? It seems like I'm usually marking fish out in 50 fathoms, but it would be nice to hear from someone that has actually fished them before. It will probably be a little less crowded than the Willamatoilet on Sunday. thanks, Kasey

Re: Saturday might be a good OCEAN day
edsr - here's a link to the CR bouy (46029)
http://seaboard.ndbc.noaa.gov/statio...$station=46029
This gives you real time bouy reports. Back up and you'll find a map and you can click on any bouy and get real time. There's also symbols for the onshore stations and links to the marine forecast (official NOAA version). If you get lost or have questions about the readings -ask.
PS - Watch the "steepness" and "period". 11 and up is great (18 or so and you won't even hardly know you're moving on 12 foot high rollers). anything under 8 gets pretty ugly (straight up and down) - in between 8-11 uncomfortable at best. If you know what a sine wave is just imagine the ocean waves as a sine wave and the wave period as the frequency (and the wave height is your amplitude). Compress the frequency and you're going straight up and straight down very fast and very often. Reduce the frequency/period (even with the same amplitude/height) and your are moving much slower and softer (and safer since the boat doesn't pitch up and down, it just goes up and down liek a cork).

Re: Saturday might be a good OCEAN day
Ed, assAssin has some good advice above. It is difficult to relate the predicted conditions to any exact point of no go.
I use the number 10 as a general guide. Add seas and swells .... if it is over 10 then count on a plan B that does not involve offshore fishing. You can still go to the beach but maybe you won't be going out there.
Longer swells can be larger before causing problems.
Anything under about 8 seconds is very rough at any size and 5 or 6 seconds is all wind chop ...
BANG, BANG, BANG all day long.
The wind direction matters a great deal too. Usually we head west into the wind and ride home with a following sea and wind. In general the ocean is rougher and windier in the afternoon. So returning with a following sea and wind may make the trip more bearable. Returning into the wind like we did last weekend can make for a rough ride.
After you do this for a while you will be able to look at it from the beach and know if it is ok or not.

Re: Saturday might be a good OCEAN day
I have a couple rules of thumb. Anything "oversquare" is dangerous and certainly very uncomfortable. By that I mean if the period in seconds is shorter than the height in feet, it is oversquare. 10 feet at 10 seconds is square, which is pretty damn nasty. I look for weather that is significantly undersquare. like 8' at 12 seconds or better.
Second rule of thumb is wind speed. 15kts or less, great day. 15-20kts not great, but fishable. 20-25kts is pushing it. 25+ and I am at home.
Combine these with Pilar's does it add up to 10 rule, and you can be pretty certain if you want to go out or not. Now if we only new the conditions a day in advance or so, we would have something.
Another thing is that they are trying to predict the worst conditions for a 24 hour period over an extensive area. Prediction could be for 8' swell, 4' wind waves, and that may be true, 100 miles north of you, but where you are it is 5 and 3, a pretty nice day.
