Default River or ocean,hummmmmm??

I hate to be an ignorant pest but,,,,,.
Each spring I get a spring break , five days off plus two weekends. This year my break was early,March15th thru the 22nd. With the Springer numbers comming over Bonne. being low at that time , I opted for the week of April 15th. Now there is rumor of an early closure on the C.R..AND, i read the post by Assissin"first blood".
He talked about fishing both days with no crowd on a flat big blue.
If ,,,, the C.R. gets a closure, or the water is colored up, or its just too crowded, will you all be out on the ocean every time it lays down? Could or would any of you be willing to help me and a good friend , get into some salty fish. Salmon maybe a Hali. We are comming over no matter what. Im just thinking about options.... I have down riggers... I just need someone willing to help a little, show us where and maby fish near by, for back up. id. p.

It is so hard answer a post like this IDP. I am torn between not wanting to show you the on ramp for the highway to hell and wanting to enable a fellow addict.

To answer your questions about the salt ...

Will there be salty dogs on big blue anytime it lays down?

Uhhhh ..... Yeah ....

http://www.ifish.net/ubb/ultimatebb....;f=21;t=001201

Will we help you get into fish?

Uhhhh .... Yeah ....

BTW, that is the main purpose of this forum ... to help each other and to go in groups for safety.

Ok, well we do try to have some fun and catch some fish too.

I'm sure you'll be able to find what you're looking for. Especially for your grateful help with others in hunting Idaho earlier on. I know we'll be heading for the hali hole but there's one problem. It opens may 8th. If you're talking May 15th you might be in business. Either way there should be bottomfish to be caught weather permitting. Let me know if this is a typo and we can try to help you out and get on the big blue. I'd almost fish there any day over springer fishing personally, but on occassion the springers can be a lot of fun.

id- The Willamette (and the channel) will still be open. Usually dirtier than the CR and it will be crowded if the main river shuts down (sure sounds like it will soon).
Keep this in your back pocket cause the Ocean may not let you out on any given day or week this time of year (well- any time of year, odds are just worse now relative to summer).

I.D.,

About all you can do is make sure you have a backup plan. This time of year it's hit or miss as to whether or not you'll be able to play on big blue, and most of the time it's miss. You need to just decide you're going to do it, post your dates here to see if anyone else has the same plans, and then make a backup plan in case that goes sour. There's always crabbing and fishing in the bays, steelhead in the rivers if their not blown, or just hanging out on the coast.

I can almost guarantee you that SOMEONE from the Salty Dogs will be out there if the ocean cooperates and more than likely would enjoy your company, I know I would.

Thanks to all , you are very kind... Is someone willing to email me your phone #, so i can personally pester you about ocean conditions and fishing.
I also would trade several days on the river for a day on a friedly blue.
Assissin mentioned that he was fishing in 50 fathoms. How far out is that from Depoe?
Will the salmon fishing stay descent for a couple weeks out there.
I dont mind you seeing that im still wet behind the ears. Hi, ho. id. p.

IDP,

He was about 6-11 miles offshore but the thing to remember is he's using downriggers with 50+ fathoms of wire and some huge downrigger balls. He's using commercial gear and most people aren't setup like that. The fish will be here when you come, it's just a matter of whether or not you can get to them or not.

You're welcome to call me but I just get my info off the net, and usually from Ifish. 503-626-7264

Thanks for the # Corrirod, ill keep it close to my heart and ill keep in touch.
I have Scotty eletric down riggers , thery are not commercial grade . I have 250 ft. of wire on them and ive only used 8 1/2 lb. balls.I have used them in Canada. The big boys up there cruse from 60 to 120 feet deep. So , my set up is just right for there.
Do the nooks always run that deep early in the spring out of Depoe? Will my set up get me to them??
My days to fish are sunday the 13th, thru friday the 18th. April. Thanks to all . id. p.

Wait a second before you answer... I gotta get myself up off the floor and wipe the tears out of my eyes first!

Call the Diver(QUICK)?? Get the knife? Pliers?? Dikes?? Yikes??
I dunno, but it almost happened once. Forgot to pull the rigger up when we were headin' in one day. Fortunatley my alert crew (Nephew and my bro-outlaw) noticed and brought the ball up while I was warming up the engine and getting set to go up on the bridge.
Unfortunatley my not so alert crew left the dang 12 lb ball hanging on the end of the rigger. Also unfortunatley apparently they didn't want to bother the skipper and let him know he was an idiot and left the dang ball down in the first place.
Soooo.... about a mile or 3 up the creek doin' 20 knots or so my alert crew starts yellin' at me to stop. Now Miss B has really good brakes so I put em' on hard. My alert crew alerted me to the fact that there was 400 feet of 200 lb cable and a 12 lb ball strung out there behind the boat!
Sooo.. being the alert skipper that I am I said a few Salty phrases and jumped down the stairs(thinking all the while about whether anyone else had ever taught a cannon ball to water ski??) only to notice that the cable was now actually headed upstream in front of the boat.
Soo... being the alert/confused skipper I am I said, this don't look good at all (while cranking in the cable which was moving very fast). Now being the alert crew they were, they fessed up to doing me the favor of bringing the ball up and not bothering me (or bothering to bring the ball onboard.
Sooo.. the thing bounced around out there, pulled all 400 feet of cable out, hit the end of the spool and broke with about 100 feet left on the boat end (where it appeared to have been spliced). Never did quite figure out how that line got up in front of the dang boat though.
soooo.. I only had nightmares for about a month where a 12 lb cannon ball came flying up through the bottom of the boat after seriousley mangling the props and shafts.
Sooo... I duuno Jen- what would you do?

id - You will need to run 12 lb balls out here (bigger would be better but your Scotties won't take it, at least minne won't. There currents in the Ocean and wind drift (cross track) to deal with out here. 12 lbs is marginal some times. The alternative is to always go one direction and that just never seems to be the ticket.
If you don't your balls drag "up" and maybe even get in the prop if you do turns or are drifting/crabbing sideways.
