1st Post - 100 lbs of Salmon
Greetings to all existing Ifish members. This is my first post and as I have read I am supposed to start with a "fish story". I have many to share but here is the story of catching 100 lbs of salmon at one time.
I spent the past 9 years as a guide on the Kenai River in Alaska searching for that mythical 100 pound King Salmon. 2 years ago while back-trolling a diver/bait rig my clients rod folded over and instantly began peeling line. As the hook was set, the action seemed a little strange but was moving like a very large fish that didn't know it was even hooked. Things were a bit crowded in the run and after rapidly backing down on the fish and moving out several other boats we finally caught up with the line. As it turned out I didn't have the next World Record on unfortunately, but what I had hooked was a metal stringer with 12 live Sockeye salmon (2 limits). Appearantly someone upstream had wanted their catch to stay fresh so they just clipped them in and let them swim, the weight of 12 swimming salmon broke the stringer and downriver they went. I was a bit disappointed at first but then realized the clients just added an additional 12 salmon to take home and they were more excited about that then the Kings.
Hope you enjoyed the story. Look forward to sharing on the Ifish board

Welcome! That's the great thing about fishing, seems you never know everything so you are constantly learning how to get the next day's catch.

Welcome aboard Kent. I remember when you did a presentation for the Steelheaders in Salem a few years ago. I believe you were talking about how to fish "rags"

Re: 1st Post - 100 lbs of Salmon
I guided in Alaska one full summer and part of another. In my limited experience there, I was amazed at the number of people who spent incredible amounts of money to bring back 40, 50, at the most a little over a 100 pounds of salmon.
I also was amazed at the number of people who saw anything interesting through a camera lens. They never just enjoyed the trip. They wanted to photograph, catch, wrap, and package, or somehow record everything. The best view they had a of their vacation was when they got home and showed the slides or the video for company.
I don't want to denigrate these folks - they found something fun or funny and can enjoy that experience for the rest of their lives. But why would people spending thousands of dollars for a vacation get excited over a dozen salmon they didn't even catch?
I found, while guiding others, that many people would enjoy so much more if they focused more on enjoying the trip and less on proving to others that they enjoyed the trip.

Re: 1st Post - 100 lbs of Salmon
Wow Seasel. It sounds youv'e become a bit jaded with your "limited" experience. It's often difficult to "see" things from a different perspective than your own or find the same enjoyment from simple things in life (like coffee for me). Me? I would absolutely LOVE to had been in your shoes guiding for awhile & watching the clients glee as they experienced the trip as they wanted to. And, someday, I hope to spend thousands too just to catch a couple of salmon in a place far from home just because I've never done it before and because i can. I will be filming the whole thing to show my family & enjoy the experience for years to come. Just try for once to feed off the excitement & bliss others have for something that they deem fun.
Hope you catch lots of springers!

Re: 1st Post - 100 lbs of Salmon
Thanks for all the "Welcomes" Full Freezer - You are correct. There is a lot of satisfaction, as a guide, in watching the excitement of someone catching their 1st salmon. I never get tired of it!
