Re: Saturday a slight break in the weather
Its weeks like this that make me want to work weekdays :depressed: The only good day is Saturday and I REALLY want to get out on the brine! I hope you all have some fun and talk nice to the gods so that they will leave a good ocean day for us mid-week fisherpeople!

Re: Saturday a slight break in the weather
Pilar, I'm planning to take my nephew out crabbing Saturday morning. My wife is going so we'll be done (outside) by high slack around 10:00. I'd like to try for some salmon but I don't really know where to fish this time of year. Maybe we'll see you out there. HJ

Re: Saturday a slight break in the weather
The forecast is changing a bit.
SAT
SE WIND 15 KT. WIND WAVES 3 FT. W SWELL 6 FT AT 11
SECONDS.
A bit more wind and waves but may be OK. If out of Barview what are you going after besides crabs? Lings, Salmon?? High slack is at 10:00 AM, low at 4:54, what time would you head in?
I'm interested but don't really want to make the drive just for crabs so I may elect to stay closer to home.
In case I make it, what channel will be monitored?

Re: Saturday a slight break in the weather
John,
I don't think I'll have time to get my boat ready, do you need any crew? If so, I'm your man. If not, that's o.k. too. I've got plenty of other stuff I should be doing around the house.
You headed down tonight or tomorrow a.m.?

Re: Saturday a slight break in the weather
Rod, Fishplay wanted to go too. That would make 3 on the boat. Works for me. The forecast continues to change .. what I like to call the 'weather vortex'.
Question is should we go to the trouble of a Newport trip and risk getting blown off? Or maybe go to Tillamook and risk the bar being closed?
I'll check the tides ... we have all day to
figure it out.
New moon Tides
Low 04:12 2.6'
High 10:02 7.3'
Low 16:40 0.0'
At Garibaldi this means that the bar will most likely be closed from noon till 17:00. At Newport we could get out at first light and back by noon. Return would be on a good sized ebb and the bar would be rough.
We could also do a late morning run and return after 5. The wind will be swinging around for the approaching front and will probably be calm until late evening. That saves us the killer 2 am drive and the ebb bar crossing. What do you think ... Rod, Greg? We can figure it out over some Hornitos tonight at Santanas.
I'll probably go there in the BCD. I have nowhere to stay if we went tonight.

Re: Saturday a slight break in the weather
Rod, I'm thinking Newport. The bar at Garibaldi is nothing to trifle with on an ebb tide. We could fish at Garibaldi but I think it would be all day out on the ocean while we wait for low slack at 16:00. So let's see that means we would be forced to fish for lings and rockfish all day??? Hmmm.... decisions, decisions. The bar at Newport is much more forgiving.
Besides I would like to fish for Salmon where you actually have a chance of catching one, the Rockpile. Know what I mean?
Rest up young man, you're going to sea tomorrow. We have to represent our species in it's place on the food chain .... Apex Predator.

Re: Saturday a slight break in the weather
Pilar,
What are you thinking for tomorrow? Rockpile and salmon? The 2:30 forecast looks even better at 2 and 6. I don't need any bottomfish, but I have no problem with the catch and release deal.
The boat hasn't been wet yet, but she just came out of the shop and is for the most part ready.
I have been waiting for shakedown run, tomorrow could be it.

Re: Saturday a slight break in the weather
SS, yes, the rockpile. I just re-upped the intake/exhaust log on my 4 banger and would love to break it in. I ran it the other day on the river and it seems to have alot more momotem than it did before.
On the trial run, Wednesday with a 17 prop, I firewalled the throttle for a few seconds. It was like 4 barrels on an old muscle car. This boat has always been pretty doggy on the top end. Above 4000 r's it has no more and tops out at about 30.... After I recovered from my surprise, I checked the GPS and saw 35, the tach said 4800!!!!!!!! Whoa, pull back on the throttle before it blows, redline is 4200 ..... It may even go faster, the 17 was cavitating when I hauled back on the throttle.
The old manifold was an OSCO universal for OMC and Merc 4 cylinder I/O. It prolly weighs about 80 lbs. The new one is a BARR and about 2/3 the physical size and weighs 50 lbs. The intake and exhaust runners are smooth and curved, unlike the OSCO which is a rectangular iron log with holes in it.
So, I'll try the 19 pitch prop that I save for long trips and solo runs and see if that will fly.
Can I break the 4 mpg barrier? I intend to find out tomorrow with a trip to the rockpile.
SS, we can find a ling for sure, no wait the limit is two now. Could you eat a ling? Salmon is a bonus and maybe we can find out if FB is hanging at the rockpile before June. So explore, shake the winter off, Salmon, bottom fish, crab ....
A day on the ocean after a long boring winter.
I think we'll start at about 8 or 9 in Newport and cross before high slack. Know any decent places to crab off Newport?

Re: Saturday a slight break in the weather
Well Okay,
I'm running home to see if I can get the boat put together tonight...hail me on the VHF or cell (541) 740-7478. I'll probably get to South Beach before you, so I may already be out at the Pile.
If I were taking my crab pots, and I might, I almost always put them north of the jetty in about 50-60 feet. Sometimes I do great with easy limits, other times it's like there isn't a crab in the ocean.
see you and Rod out there.

Re: Saturday a slight break in the weather
John,
Looks like th CR Buoy is reporting 1'chop/7ft. swell at 12.5 seconds and decreasing. I think we're going to have some good conditions tomorrow either way.
I'd be happy with Tillamook but it's up to the captain. I'm feeling a little under the weather today so hopefully it won't get any worse or I'll have to be landlocked.
I know how this weather thing works so I've got no problems with a last minute switch. You pick it and I'll follow.
