Default do i need an oregon license?

i looked at the regs online, but couldn't find it. i have a washington saltwater license but i am leaving out of hammond for tuna fishing. my brother says yes, and my dad says no. if i can't find the answer, i'll just pick up an oregon license to be safe.

I believe you do. If you are fishing out of an Oregon Port you need an Oregon license. If you are fishing for salmon or steelhead you need a tag as well. If your crabbing you need a crabbing license.

My understanding of the reciprocity rules is that either a Oregon or Washington License is valid from any of the Columbia river ports when fishing from a boat (salt or fresh). It is a little confusing because the salt water reciprocity rules only seem to cover out to 3 miles.

From Hammond, if you have a Washington license & tags for the species you are fishing for, you are legal. My son, who guides out of Hammond, has taken out Washington residents on their license without a problem. I believe the reciprocity with the State of Washington covers the entire Columbia. I have another son who regularly fishes the mid-Columbia from a Washington boat launch on his Oregon license.

You do need a Oregon license to fish offshore from an Oregon Port it doesn't matter if your launching from the Columbia it is in the regs!!!PEACE

I don't mean to hijack this thread but to me it is almost the same question. I am an Oregon resident, Oregon license and my boat is regestered in Oregon. I am considering leaving out of Illwaco to fish in the ocean is my Oregon license all i need???
I would appreciate any info. you might add.
Thanks

That used to be the case a few years ago, but it is no longer true. My understanding is they changed it because of safety reasons. They didn't want to force people to a port on one side when conditions deteriorate.

Thanks tjgorge, I thought that was the case but then read this thread and it got me wondering.

From ODFW website, 2008 regulations:

"When angling in the Pacific Ocean within 3 miles of shore between Cape Falcon, Oregon and Leadbetter Point, Washington either a resident Washington license or an Oregon license is valid. Persons other than Washington residents must have a valid Oregon license to land fish in Oregon which were caught in the ocean."

AND

"Anglers that are residents of either Oregon or Washington may launch or take out their boats from either shore, regardless of which state license they hold;"

http://www.dfw.state.or.us/fish/docs...egulations.pdf

Good to go, IMO.

This is a weird issue.

Call OSP in the area before you go without an Oregon license. Get it from the mouth of the trooper that may be the one to cite you based on their interpretation of the regs.

I am not one to try and argue with an OSP officer ticket book in hand.

I just pick up a 2 day license..no problems

Either licence is good.

we got checked a few years ago at depo bay at the cleaning station, and he wanted to see everyones licence, I never saw the point in that.

somtimes we take a non-fisher aboard just for the trip, i think it would be tough to write a ticket to a person and acuse them of fishing just for being on a boat with fish as long as there are enough valid licences on board to cover the amount of fish you have. even if your slimy and stink, their is no law about handling fish at sea.

didnt mean to hijack your thread.

Although i'm already convinced that i need an oregon license, i called odfw just for fun (it wasn't). after and extremely arduous journey through their automated system, i finally got a live person. he had no idea, but put me through to someone that should know. she didn't know either, so i got passed to a thrid person. i told her i had a washington license and was leaving out of hammond, but didn't tell her anything else. she didn't ask where i was going, what i was fishing for, or if i'm a washington resident. she just said that i needed a license. for all she knew, i could have been fishing in the river. its only $12 for the license, so not really a big deal.
