Default Varieties of tomatoes

My family loves to eat fresh tomatoes and I'm becoming something of a tomato growing fanatic. I'm not into quantity, but I'm trying to grow the sweetest and tastiest tomatoes possible here in Vancouver.

I also try to choose tomatoes that do well in our climate.

On the cherry side, I seem to gravitate to the Sweet 100s. I've tried others, but the Sweet 100s always seem to produce and they taste great.

For the mid-size, I seem to do best with Early Girl and for the larger, it is tough to beat the Beefsteak variety.

Anyone have "can't forget to plant" varieties to share?

Sweet 100s
Early Girl
Beefsteak

Again, I'm not into canning....just eating fresh by the bowl full.

not to hijack the thread but my tomatos are still as green as can be. Do you think they will get ripe?

Though a hybrid(I think) the Sweet 100 is hard to beat for taste in a cherry tomato.

Beyond that, do yourself a favor and try some heirloom varieties. For medium fruit and sweet try one of several Black Russian varieties.

For beefstake varieties that will blow you away try:
  • Brandywine (red, yellow or black)
  • Cherokee purple
  • Mortgage Lifter
These tomatoes are not "engineered" for transportation, bruising, or shelf life. They are designed by nature to eat. You'll wonder what those red things you've been buying at the store for decades are!

Then experiment with other heirloom varieties and report back! There are several Polish varieties that are excellent as well.

When I lived in Gresham we raised the same ones you do.

You say Tomato I say Tomoto

The wife and I LOVE TOMATOES
We have been known to eat them for Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner in one way shape or form. My all time favorite is fresh sliced tomatoes with salt and pepper on them and mashed potatoes. I know that is weired.

The rule is to top them on the first of August. No new flowers from here on out. Start wacking! Force the plants to put everything into the fruit instead of more flowers.

One cherry I plant every year is called Suncloud, Very tasty little cherry. I've never tried the sweet 100 so next year I'll do a side by side taste test.

Another I always put in is Lemon Boy's A very tasty yellow tomato.

Freak - I put in an Cherokee purple this year per your advise, cant wait to try it

I HATE eating tomatoes (my husband does, too!) but I grow them and can sauce with them (yum!). I have been growing Juliet the last couple years, and they work really well for what I do with them!
