Default Fishing Hawaii

Hi, I'm new here at Ifish. I posted this on the main message board and was asked to also post it here.
Once a year we go to Hawaii to visit my wife's family. I always plan fishing trips while we are there, we got back Monday from this years trip. On Monday 3/10/03, 5:00am we headed out of Sand Island Port, Honolulu HI. I was fishing on a friends boat Bill Lee with his Partner, my new friend Hodgi "Hutch" Higa. The three of us cruised in the darkness towards Bouy HH, about 18 miles out. There was an awesome sunrise and we set up 3 poles to troll as we neared the bouy. Unlike trolling for Salmon, we were trolling about 8-9 mph. Before we even reached the bouy there was a loud bang, fish on! I was dancing around the deck trying to figure out which pole to grab, 3 poles out 3 fish on! We landed all 3, Ono or Wahoo about 20 lbs each. We spent the day in the sun, looking for birds & signs of fish. We caught Ono(Wahoo),MahiMahi(Dorado), Ahi(Yellow fin Tuna)and Aku(skipjack tuna). When the Poles go down at that speed it is a adrenaline rush to say the least. At one point with 5 lines out we had a fish on the left corner pole,I grabbed it to reel in and another fish hit the left outside pole, tripped the outrigger & spun the pole around toward me a full speed, Wow! We landed both a Mahi and a Ono. 14 fish for the day, had a couple cold ones on the way back to Oahu and made plans to fish again Thursday.
Fished again Thursday, slower at the bouy so we trolled a mile or so East, spotted birds & a charter boat. Set up poles for Tuna as we could see the Aku jumping. Caught a couple small Aku the had a tripple take down of Bigger Ahi Tuna, the fish I was fighting was on the lighter line we had set up for the Aku, took a big run & broke the leader. Hutch reeled in the 2nd fish & I gaffed it, I was nervous but my first gaff job went well.
As Bill reeled in the third Tuna, right behind the boat the fish took off hard around the left side of the boat. I ran up and put it in gear. After a short fight Bill reeled in the Head of a nice Ahi, a BIG SHARK ate the fish right off our line, sliced the body off the head like a razor. Bill & Hutch saw the Shark & said at least 8 ft long! The School of fish we had just entered disappeared.
What a great trip, we landed 20 fish in 2 days lost 3 or 4. Weather was perfect, 82-85'F. I'm still in search of a Marlin, need to fish Hawaii in the summer months but hate to leave good weather and good fishing here.

Look forward to meeting some of you on the river!
Sorry story is so long, I have picture of the fish and what was left of the shark bite fish, I can attemt to add as a reply post if anyone wants to see them. -Steve
We went springer fishing last weekend after returning from Hawaii, lost 2 springers to the Sealions near St.Helens. :depressed: (that story is on the main message board also)
