What's this spider's name?? HELP!!
My girlfriend shrieked as she opened the shower curtain.
(no, I wasn't in there).
I ran in to find a 1 1/2" spider!!!
She swears it's a bad one...brown recluse? What is it???
It is now swimming down the toilet tunnel.
THANKS all you spider men and women out there!

It's a Giant House Spider (no big deal). Although Hobo spiders (bad news) look very similar.

it looks very similar to a brown recluse----looked up brown recluse on google earlier today as one of my patients was bitten by one that was in his sleeping bag-- He ended up losing both of his legs!--i was so alarmed that i looked it up online today!---this event <the bite that is > happened down in Arizona where they are quite common

I agree.
These spiders are actually a good sign as they will not share territory with a Brown Recluse.

It's a female Hobo. Not aggressive but can leave a bit of a sore if they decide to bite.

We're leaning towards FEMALE Hobo spider.
http://www.nps.gov/public_health/int...ts/fs_hobo.htm
Looks so close! They go through phases of coloring.
Thanks,
BU

Re: What's this spider's name?? HELP!!
I always thought the Hobo spider did not have any distinct rings in the legs.
This website gives a lot of info on the Hobo. They do have uniformly colored legs.

Evict it. Unless you are a total geek you will not be able to tell the difference between one that can hurt you and a harmless one. A native American friend says all brown spiders stay out, green or white ones can live inside.

I proposed this at my house, where I am king.
I was quickly vetoed by Queen, who said ALL colors, shapes, and sizes of spiders go OUT. And, now, just for mentioning it, I can sleep on the couch and stand guard for any that may have snuck inside.

Try not to think about it coming back while you're sitting on the throne.
