Youth kicks off 08 elk season!
When Justine killed her buck last October, she was barely done celebrating on top of the ridge when she looked at her dad and I and said. I want to kill an elk next year.
We smiled and said...yea...so would we...lol
We didn't draw out elk tags this year so she decided to invoke her "youth first" opportunity on elk. At 14 I thought...she should wait a few more years. She shoots a light gun, and it often tough/cold hunting during the rifle season we hunt.
Her and her dad asked, what hunt should we pick for her cow hunt? I told them of a few hunts I knew we could have a great chance at getting an elk but I don't think she has time to do it. School will be demanding, she'll be starting high school in a month, she is on two sports teams and going to cheerleading this summer...how would she fit it all in and make a quality effort at a golden opportunity? She has no fear and was eager to make it work.
Well...she made a great decission and chose a hunt that lasts 8 months...surely we could get lucky once if all the hard work failed.
Day 1 we made a long stalk and got denied in the 4th quarter, but this morning (Day 2) she surprised all of us with a one shot kill at 120 yards with her 6mm.
Dad was very proud, I was pumped up...she is still on cloud 9....we're never going to hear the end of it from her now
Justine and Dad (Gerold).
It won't surprise me if she draws a sheep or goat tag soon, I know she will be up for it.

Awesome job. Great coloring on that cow!!! I remember the cloud my daughter was on when she shot her 1st elk at 14. She can't wait to do it again.

Re: Youth kicks off 08 elk season!
Actually, she did that last fall:
http://www.ifish.net/board/showthread.php?t=172795
She watched us botch an attempt on a bear on Day 1, and now she wants to get a bear...of coarse. We figure, she is such a good shot and such good luck, it ought to be money in the bad..right?
Oh and she's waiting until her pronghorn tag...say 2020??? lol
