Default Marine Looking for Help

Hi all,

I am looking for a little help. I am a Marine serving on active duty with 6th ESB in Portland Oregon. We are trying to go on a fishing trip with the active duty Marines here. There are approximately 40 of us and we only have a limited budget. I myself have a 15ft smokercraft lodge and another Marine has a 20ft alumaweld. This only gets 10 of us out on the water. The trip is going to be on August 28th (a thursday) and I am looking for anybody that can help with providing a boat (we can pay for gas and a little extra maybe) and gear. I have been taked by the commanding officer to put this together so that the Marines here can see a little bit of what the NW has to offer. If you can help please send me a PM and I will contact you reguarding the specifics. I have contacted guides I found online asking for help but have got no responses. Most of these Marines are Iraq Vets and just want to get out on the water and see what I preach about here on a daily basis. Thank you to anyone who can help or who would like to but for whatever reason are unable to do so.

Default Marines looking for help

How is everyone today? I am not quite sure how this works but I can tell you what I am trying to do. I am an active duty Marine stationed down at the reserve station in portland. We (the active duty staff) are trying to put together a MWR (morale welfare and recreation) event for the Marines stationed here. Alot of the Marines here have never been fishing or are from out of the area and dont know where to fish or what to fish for. We get a set amount of money every quarter to go out and do some kind of fun event. The problem is that once those that dont have fishing licenses get their one day license it has eaten up a decent chunk of the budget. Guides are too expensive for as many marines as we have.

I have a boat myself a 15' smokersmokercraft lodge and one of the gunnys has a 20' alumaweld sled that we can utilize but we need more. between the two of us we can support 10 marines but have a staff of 40!!!! If I can find somewhere to go where there is a park near where we would be fishing that would help as not ALL would need to be out on the water at the same time.

Most of these Marines are Iraq or Afganistan Vets and others will be soon enough. The LtCol has charged me with putting this even together for sometime in august. We are willing to drive a fair distance (maybe to the coast) in order to get this done. For the marines that are new to the area it will give them a chance to experience some of the best fishing around and get involved in the sport. i have got several Marines into it by taking them out on my boat for sturgeon or shad or whatever is hot at the time.

It takes alot to get everyone together on the same page for an event of this magnitude and I am sure that there will be many who would like to help but may not be able. My thanks to anyone that helps get the word out on what we are trying to do. This is going to take place on Aug 28 if anyone can help please let me know. thank you again. Please help!!!

Salmon only open between Sept 1-15.h If the date changes to this time frame I will take 3 Marines. Have a 20 foot boat and all the gear. Last year took a returning Marine vet and He caught a 35# chinook. I will never forget His smile.

What kind of fishing are you planning to do and where are you located? Fishing ten people out of those two boats could be pretty tight.

If you can someone please get these guys on the water in a Boat. Cpl Brawn you may want to look into getting charter. No need to worry about tackle and gear plus everyone can be together. If the guys have to pay a few bucks I am they won't mind seems your all together.

PM sent. I recommend sturgeon in the Columbia for a lot of action and easy, productive fishing near Portland, where we can likely round up enough boats to float 40 marines on a Thursday. About 10-12 boats would be needed, and of course 40 sturgeon poles.

He is with 6th ESB here in Portland so the columbia will be fine for sturgeon. As I post this I don't remember the dates he posted either. remember everyone needs fishing licenses too!

Once I hear where this is going to take place I may be able to commit. I could take 3 and have rods and gear if it is for sturgeon. I have a 19' SeaSwirl. Portland area preferred..........

Thank you to everyone for your help I would prefer to stay in the Portland area as it makes it easier on the Marines I think sturgeon sounds great. I know from my experience on a average day I can knock the sturgeon dead but may not get so much as a bite when going for salmon (maybe I am doing something wrong I dont know) I have a picture of me holding my 59 1/2 keeper on my desktop at work and you would not believe the reaction I get fom the marines around here when they see it. I only have sturgeon gear for 2 and the same goes for the other Marine that is going to take out his boat. The date is Thursday Aug 28th. I am very greatful to those who are stepping up to the plate to help us out. I know that everyone needs a license which will eat up some of the limited budget as well I am sure that Since my sturgeon adventures this spring I got at least 6 other Marines to get their licenses hopefull I can get more to do the same out of their own pocket. What a response THANK YOU AGAIN!!!! If you shoot my a PM I will give you my e-mail address so we can do some more planning.

If we can't come up with enough gear that is OK as we can just share. I am sure that a boat with 4 Marines in it will not have 4 fish on at the same time. Please spread the word of what I am trying to do. I look forward to fishing with you as do the Marines here at 6th ESB in Portland Oregon!!!!!!!

I'm Navy, but cannot help that day...dragging my boat up to Puget Sound to fish over my dad's ashes (also Navy).

I do, though, have five sturgeon rigs ready to fish that can be borrowed and may be able to help rustle up another boat or two...

Someone let me know.

I would love to be able to help. I have a 17ft. Alumaweld can carry four total but would only have 2-3 fishing at anytime (OK with me I would just watch). Are we talking about keeper size sturgeon or oversize somewhere? I am not the most experienced but willing to tag along.

I will be out of town from the 20th-26th so would need to have all planned before leaving, let me know if I can be of service to those who have served us.

Let me know ahead of time but I can take out 2 guys with me, I have all the equipment and have a jar head drill instructor for a son down in California. I would be more than happy also to take a few of you out with me. On Saturday we got a 6' sturgeon and a 11 1/2 footer at bonniville.

I am overwelmed with the response that I have got you all are awsome!!!!!!!!!! I am getting a lot of questions on where do we meet? I dont know the columbia and primarily fish the willamette as I live 5 Min from the launch under the 205 Bridge. Does anyone know a good central location to launch from maybe somewhere where there is a grassy area as well so that we can BBQ when we are done and take care of all those who are steppng up to the plate on this. I will e-mail all those that are stepping up and give you my contact info so that the plans can be set in stone. I will try to get an PM to everyone today with my contact info once I can figure out where we are launching from. After doing my math we have enough for 25 marines so far and still need more help!!!! My e-mail is grant.brawn@usmc.mil if you would like to just e-mail me.

About five more boats needed for 15 more marines.

Rooster Rock State park off 84 has a boat launch and a channel out to the Columbia. Not sure how shallow the water is in there right now. There is sturgeon fishing right outside the Rooster Rock boat launch in the CR.

I am the farthest thing from a sturgeon guy. As long as no one takes my picture I would be willing to take some warriors out.

I have buds who work over the sucker fish pretty hard and will do my best to perfom.

You can see my boat on the returning troops thread. I have all tackle required and promise to be up to speed before the day of.

I will ask a buddy with another open sled too. He could handle 4 more.

I'll throw in.

I can handle 4 anglers plus myself.

Any other way I can help, send me a PM. I will aslo be asking folks to donate license fees, we should be able to get quite a few free passes for these heros.

Question Re: Marine Looking for Help

I have had a couple of guys say cathedral park is a good place for shakers and keepers. I dont fish the columbia so i am not sure where we would have to put in there. Please give me your opinions on this so we can figure out where we are launching and get that info to everyone that has volunteered to take us out. I know the time we would like to launch is 0600. There will be a BBQ as well and plenty of ggod chow for our volunteers and a little ceremony type thing to thank those that are taking care of us, so there needs to be a grassy area. I dont really care whether we do the columbia or willamette I just want them to catch as many fish as possible.....so where do we go?

Cpl B,

Check out this thread. http://www.ifish.net/board/showthread.php?t=209648

Think the marines can handle some of these monsters?

These are my home waters. Shakers, keepers and Oversize. Columbia River right near Camas.

Grassy areas and parks: Rooster Rock, Beacon Rock, Cottonwood, Portco

I don't have a boat but I would feel kinda warm inside if someone would let me contribute. I have a good sturgeon rod that I would be glad to loan. I would also gladly contribute a few bucks toward fuel to someone who is volunteering their boat.

pm me if I can help.

I would love to be able to help out some way. I have gear that I could loan for the occasion or I would be willing to help donate for license fees.
Let me know what I can do.

I do have a boat and could accomodate 3 other people but I'm not sure that I can fish that day.

A great idea and what an honor to be able to help!

There will be a BBQ as well and plenty of ggod chow for our volunteers and a little ceremony type thing to thank those that are taking care of us, so there needs to be a grassy area. I dont really care whether we do the columbia or willamette I just want them to catch as many fish as possible.....so where do we go?

This sounds great. I have a 22' NR that can handle 3 or 4 + me. How about a little "Biggest Legal Sturgy Caught by a Marine" contest? I got fifty to donate to that lucky GI. I got all the rods, bait, and gas- just let me know (PM or hady@actionnet.net ) when (Aug 28 I think) and where (somewhere on the Columbia)

Hey all,

I know that I have not posted in a while and that you all are standing by for guidance on where we will be putting in. I am sending out an e-mail to all those who have given me their e-mail address for my distribution list. Once I get responses from everyone I will let you all know for sure where we are putting in. Thank you all again. Still need a couple more boats. Lets spread the word and see if we can get them in time.

To all those that have volunteered to take us out or donate for licenses or to through money into a pot for biggest keeper I thank you. Please if you have not already sent me an e-mail please do so, so that I can add you to the distribution list. For those that are offering up money/gift cards to help with fishing licenses e-mail me and I will give you the base address to send it to or we can meet in person so that I can personally thank you. especially if it is at the oak grove GI Joes AKA Joes as I am normally there at least once a week anyway. Thanks again.

From what I can find it only applies to disable war vets, in which case it's free.

verbage from the regs...

"Resident Permanent Licenses:
Resident Disabled War Veteran
Angling and Hunting License Free
Available only at ODFW offices.
Must have resided in Oregon for at least 6 consecutive months
immediately before applying for a license and provide written
certification of at least 25 percent disability from Veterans Affairs or
a branch of the Armed Forces. "
