Re: Road trip tp the Whitehorse
Good for you Santiam! I'm sure you'll have a great trip.
I dream about that country about once a week after our hunt over there last year. It's an awesomely rugged and remote area.
Did you draw another tag over there this year, maybe for Buck Deer?
I'm sure you'll have plenty of pics to share when you get back. That is a whirlwind trip for one weekend! I hope you've taken a co-pilot.

Re: Road trip tp the Whitehorse
I will be making that drive for Labor day weekend. Some family friends drew 2nd season speed goat tags. A buddy and I are going over for moral support, scouting, bunny busting and yote calling. I will use any excuse to there.

Re: Road trip tp the Whitehorse
Well, after a long night of driving we got there about 2:30...Took a very needed catnap waiting for daylight...
Once it started to lighten up it didn't take long to find some...Heck, the sun wasn't even up yet..
I would guess that we saw close to a hundred antelope Saturday with a large percenatge of bucks...We saw LOTS of bucks...Most were to far away for good pics, but we got close to several...
Ken wants this one...He likes the classic heart shape of the horns...
He kinda liked this one to,
In fact, he liked them ALL..

Re: Road trip tp the Whitehorse
We were getting kinda tired, but still had enough enery to catch some high desert trout for dinner before we hit the sack..
Daylight found us procrastinating..
Found these deer back in the rocks out of the sun...I see horns...
Anyway, lots of animals and my brother Ken and our buddy Vince are going to be dreaming of antelope for the next couple of weeks...I won't be going over with them for the hunt,I wish I could, but will let you know how they do...
For the bunnybusters...LOTS of jacks...

I've been waiting to see this pics all weekend as well. Very cool. That second buck looks really nice, tall and looks like he's got good mass. Can't wait for the next batch of pics with one on the ground.

Re: Road trip tp the Whitehorse
Cliff,
That country has a lot of antelope...Look on a map, find one of the numerous small reservoirs and you will find lopes...
Dry camping with cots?...Is there another way?
Those boys are getting giddy...Its the first antelope hunt for both..
I sure wish I had a tag...

Re: Road trip tp the Whitehorse
Thanks for sharing the great pics!
Be sure to tell your brother not to shoot the first buck that comes along. As you saw there are plenty of good bucks to be taken if a guy can control his trigger finger. Remind him how many years it takes to draw that hunt! (It took my partner and I twelve years) The hunt only gets better as the week runs on, as the pressure drops off. I'll bet they are chomping at the bit for season to get here.
That is a long trip for a weekend. Thanks again!

Re: Road trip tp the Whitehorse
I killed this little 13 inch heart shaped buck there two years ago. About a mile east of the pond that you probably caught those fish out of - we talked about this last year before I headed over for my mule deer hunt and you shared some valuable information and pictures. Since I drew Whitehorse last year and killed the buck below, we only had about a 2% chance of drawing without any points...and lo and behold, we got it again. First time for everything - I've never drawn a hunt before I was "supposed" to.
Thanks for the report - hopefully we can find another dandy muley over there this year.

Re: Road trip tp the Whitehorse
Yes, I was as shocked as ever when I found out we drew. We've been hunting over there for 9 years - usually every 3rd year. We saw 4 dandy bucks there last year but only got a shot at the one I stumbled on. I'm looking forward to heading over again. Still wondering where you found that Juniper tree - I was convinced there wasn't a tree in that entire unit.

Absolutely love the pronghorn and it's environs!! PLEASE post pics from all angles of the hunt.
I was soooooooo pi$$ed off this year as my hunting partners, Dad and Al, were locked in to getting a tag. I was going to film them.

That's a nice mount. Would you mind sharing some info? Taxedermist, B&C score?

Re: Road trip tp the Whitehorse
Santiam,
I hope my Buck looks that good! I would also like to know who your taxidermist is, what a great mount. That is the perfect way remember your hunt, you can look at him everyday now. Pictures are good, but shoulder mounts are the ticket!
We've got to put our head's together and figure out how to draw another Whitehorse tag without having to wait twelve years.
Thanks for posting the pic and by the way I'm guessing your buck makes the Oregon book. Not that that matters, because he is a great trophy in anybodies book.
I'm still working on getting my story and pics up from last years hunt. Hang in there.

Re: Road trip tp the Whitehorse
I do not know the score...I didn't score him...My goal was a mature buck, not a yougster and that is what he is..So he scores "mature buck"
Hunters Taxidermy in Veneta did the work..The buck was kind of a mess...A bald spot the size of a baseball where the neck and chest meet and his nose was ripped open...A prong in the nostril from another buck I think...
My taxidermist was worried about how to fix him and I told him I didn't want him fixed...Thats the buck I shot and I wanted him just like he was...NO FIXING...
He is not that red.I hurried to get a pic as the sun was going down...LOL Kinda reddish from the sunset...
I intend to keep putting in Bob...Sooner or later...Ken and the boys will be back with new pics before we see yours...LOLOL
