Re: Lure help needed
Ditto on what Threemuch said...but I would add rapala's and iron to that list. Rapala CD 14 or 18 works great on just about anything that swims. I would also get some iron...I use Dart's, but Tady's or Ironman jigs are popular down south.
Good luck and have fun.

Re: Lure help needed
Excellent list, Kurt. The only modification might be to bring a few large (8 to 11 inch) versions of the Zukers & clones. And the one thing I might add would be either a Braid marauder or a Yo Zuri Bonita, to fill the "large plug" category.

Re: Lure help needed
Sabiki rigs and live bait hooks. It's all about rustling up some live bait. That way you could "match the hatch" so to speak. Just a thought.

Lure help needed
I will be leaving for Midway Island (yes the same island as the battle) on Saturday for work. I am looking for what you old salty dogs would bring in your tackle box if you had a limited amount of room. Various fish species to catch, with a concentration on black jack, ahi, mahi-mahi and marlin. Any information on lures, etc would be appreciated.

Re: Lure help needed
If I could only have a few lures for saltwater fishing anywhere in the world, and didn't want to buy local (I would encourage buying local), and didn't want to buy a bunch of stuff I wouldn't use here, they would be the following:
Krocodile, 5/8 and 1 oz version in blue mack and green mack. Cast, trolled slow or fished on the slide, deadly on all species that eat smaller fish.
Fishtrap, with 1 and 2 oz heads in sardine or anchovy colors. Ditto on the kroc, and all fish like soft baits. Good for fish that key on swimming motion instead of fluttering motion.
Feathers, for me I like zukers and sevenstrand tuna clone feathers, in mexican flag, purple and black, and zuchinni. Good for albacore here, will catch yft and dodos there.
Cedar plug, plain and purple/black. Same as above.
Sevenstrand green machine. Best all around big game bait.

Re: Lure help needed
You got a foldaboat for the airplane? If not I wouldn't worry about taking anything. Assuming there's charters they will be well equip'd for the local fishing. None of the fish you mention are cast off the beach types. They'll all be out beyond the barrier reef(s). Take some iron to throw off the beach and see what you can dredge up out of the coral (if it's legal).
Hmmm.... not thinking of hiring a local with an outrigger canoe are you? Sounds like fun! He might not like paddleing at 10 knots pulling feathers all day though!

Re: Lure help needed
Midway Island no longer has a concesionaire company running eco-tourism. That ended approx. 1 year ago when the company Midway Phoenix left the Island. The island is actually managed by the US Fish and Wildlife Service and I happen to do contract work for them. So.. there are not charters, we fish out of our own boats, no live bait is allowed within the lagoon and you can only keep one fish a day and this only is the on island cook will be using it for subsidence. The bulk of the catching is just for the fun. The last time I checked, I believe over 25 world records have come from Midway for fish. Thanks for all your input on lure types.
