Default GPS

Since we are basically at war now, does anyone know if the goverment will mess with the GPS signals. My understanding is that in time of war the could change the the signal to be less accurate so everyone except the military has less realiablity...Roger

Most likely it will throw off the gps signaling. It's kind of a dumb deal. It now makes it accurate to +,- 30' instead of 3. But realistically, what's 30' to a bomb nowadays. But it's their toy, and they can do what they want with it.

Actually during the last Gulf War the GPS signals were more accurate as they turned off the scrambling. The commanders of the units realized that mom and dad had set so many handhelds to junior that they didn't want to risk friendly fire accidents.

DOD has always had that capability. But under normal circumstances, it is the policy of the government to not use S/A. Pres. Clinton in May of 2000 signed an executive order to remove S/A. This was after much lobbying by boating and aviation interests.

There maybe periods during the new hostiles that they may impose S/A but I suspect the opposite will be true. Most of the "smart" bombs use GPS and having S/A on would be an additional factor that the software in the bombs would have to deal with. I doubt that anyone would want to risk that in warfare.

You can easy check if S/A is on by checking the EPE feature in your GPS unit. If you have a large estimated position factor then S/A is on.

The military uses a scrambled GPS code...It is entirely different than the public codes.
