Personal the most common bait is Puss and Boots fish flavored cat food which can be bought by the case during shrimp season. The key to the bait is what you mix with it to immediately attract shrimp when your pot goes in the water. Ground up herring, mackeral, herring oil, fish meal, etc are all additives that are used in various combinations. We usually put the bait in mesh holders (like gutter mesh) and locate it in the middle of the pot.
Usually shrimp in over 300' of water, and the tides are usually very strong that time of year like -3.0 to +13.0. So need to weight pots.
