Default HERE THEY COME!!!!!

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Just read this in the Los Angeles Times.....

Pete Thomas:
The Outdoors
First Hints of Spring Fever Creep North

Spring may still be a week away, but spring fever has already reached epidemic proportions south of the border and is working its way north.

"Unusual? It's unheard of for this time of year, really," Jeff DeBuys, skipper of the Red Rooster III, said Wednesday of his encounter two weeks ago with a large school of albacore 340 miles south of his home port in San Diego. "It's really interesting because [another boat] found some albacore 140 miles below where we found ours, so that makes me think there are a lot of fish in the area."

Albacore fever usually doesn't set in until June or July, but with fish off Baja California so early, and presumably migrating slowly northward, it may start much sooner this year.

As for the Red Rooster III, it will arrive Saturday morning after a 20-day trip to Hurricane Bank and Clipperton Atoll, where giant yellowfin tuna and slender wahoo were the main attractions.

"We only caught a handful of albacore on our way down because we had to get a move on," DeBuys said.

So maybe we could have a bet among us "virgins" for who will be the first to catch his or her first tuna. Seems there's a bunch of us "wannabes" out there, and if we ponied up a few $$$, the winner might even be able to wrangle a new rod or reel out of the deal.

Anybody game? Maybe even a prize for the first skipper to be involved with said sacrifice?

This could be fun.

Excellent idea skein! My plan is to shamelessly glean every bit of info I can and then collect the winnings. I'm in!

Rod and reel? Heck, I would happy to get back monies spent on lures and leader. And, I have the feeling the problem is going to get worse.

Northriver1,

What's this, "Heck, I would happy to get back monies spent on lures and leader?" No, no. We're talking about free money here. It ties right in with voodoo economics and balance of trade (whatever that is). You have to be able to let go.

Illustration:

You decide to go tuna fishing. Your boat isn't up to it, so you buy a $30K boat. You spend another $4K on jewelry, like chart plotters, GPS's, radios, and downriggers. You pick up a couple of Mustang suits - $550. You get $80 worth of lures, $60 worth of line and leader, $30 for assorted swivels, snaps, and hooks, and two new $140 reels and $90 rods. You fill up the fuel tank for $225, and toss $20 in the pot for "First Wannabe Tuna."

Skein wins.

You shrug and say, "Oh, well, it was only 20 bucks."

See how easy that is?

Don't worry about getting your money back. You got your money's worth - it's just hidden.

Dr. Skein

NR1,
I shouldn't be telling you this with Mr. F on the board  but there are some deals on tuna gear on Ebay. I got a 2 Tuna Clone Feathers NIP for 3.25 + 2.50 shipping. You have to look around and try many searches, know what your max $ will be. Then hope some Cederplug Out Biding Lowlife doesn't out bid you.

Can proffessionals join in this bet? I mean, I won't steep so low as to use my vast stores of knowledge to get the first Albie or the fact that I'm out there almost everyday, just shaking for a chance to get them going this year. The first time I hear of some commercial guy picking up a few, I'm headed offshore! So can I still get in?? Please.........

ATC, you bet, as long as I am on board. Virgin's need a fighting chance.

Frogpond, You will need more than blood to get YOUR seat back. I need someone who is not putting Friday's dinner all over the back of the boat. It may even help to have a few gray hairs.

Keta, I did you a favor, read Bait Boy's review of the plugs we bought. Anyway, I'm gonna win so why don't you pony up the money you saved on those poor overpriced and quality shipped cedar plugs and fill up my pot.
