smoking dangers
I have made some comments about not liking smoking on my boat, (though I had a smoker on board during the OTC)
Besides for the smell being a possible trigger to get sick, the link descibes one other potential little problem

I am pretty sure my vessle could NOT withstand a 12 hour fire, and it wouldnt be 70 million dollars in damage either

Re: smoking dangers
I remember my first day on the USS Sacramento in subic bay, it caught fire! They didn't even untie it, they ripped it from the pier with sea tugs and took it way out to sea as we fought the fire! Untied us and said good luck, I asked a petty officer, arn't we going to get some help, nope kid, this thing has warheads, bombs, lots of other ammo and a ton of fuel! She will take everything within 50 miles with her! Don't worry about your may west, this thing wont go down, she goes up! Looking back it was pretty amazing seeing a bunch of 18 to 20 yr old kids fight that fire, to save her and themselves and me!

That was my first thought as well.
There is something only the "old timers" would know about.

Sorry I stole the punch line to illustrate something else.
About a month ago a longtime friend and fishing partner had unbeknownst to me, returned to smoking.
As I turned from cutting bait, there he stood in my cabin area trying to hold the light on his match bending down by the wheel.
He was greatly surprised when I rather forcefully snatched his matches away from him...he was trying to hold a light within 1 foot of newly installed saddle tanks.
What do you think a 17' boat would look like with 45 gals aboard going up in flames?
Makes the no-smoking policy easy to implement though.

Re: smoking dangers
I still laugh when I see the BOE smoker comments. That must have been 3 years ago. Good thing he moved

Re: smoking dangers
Having served aboard one of those exact fine pieces of machinary and now working in a field repairing them I have a lot of respect for that fire. I have seen pictures of the damage done.
But the whole smoking thing was not and could not have been just one cigerette. I personally believe this is a cop out. On board those ships we use JP-5 fuel. It is of the consistancy of diesle fuel. One cigerette or ash from said smoke did not start that fire. Most likely this was being used as an auxilery smoking space and a whole ash tray lit off. That is the only way it could have happened in my mind.
But then again I don't know. more likely senerio was an electrical fire that morphed out of control. They said it was started in the Aux Boiler supply and exhaust vent space (we called them "vent rooms") but those are normally unmanned spaces. I have seen fires and it is amazing how quickly the spaces fill with smoke.
I for one don't know but am sceptical. Our shipyard has sent a ton of people to work that boat to get it ready for Japan. The Admiral in that article that is head of the Kitty Hawk strike group I have personally served under.
I don't think smoking was why the CO was releived. Larger issues such as space cleanliness and preservation were at hand. Throw in the fact the fire burned for a long time before being discovered. Just an opinion here.
