Default VHF Raido

Would like some feed back on A Uniden Solara . All I ever had was a CB. Can this be used like a CB? I guess what i'm wondering is can CB channels be picked up? I think not but don't know. Is this raido worth $85 new?
Thanks for the help.

trap50,
I'm not an expert like some of the guys on this board, but I just installed a Standard Horizon Intrepid on my boat. VHF radios operate on a different frequency than CB's and they use a different antenna. The Standard Horizon is completly waterproof and can be tied into your GPS. There are a couple of people at Boaters World that are very helpful in deciding on a unit.$85 sound like a good price for the Solara, but you can get a few more features for a little more money. You might also try doing a search on this board, I know that there are a lot of guys here that can give you better advice than myself.

CB and VHF are different frequencies and need different antenna, or one made for both and a splitter. I bought a cheaper one 5 years ago, and just replaced it with a better one after it quit. There are some nice features like tying in to the GPS so if you ever call for help, the coast guard will get your location. West Marine is where I got mine, and they have the full range of radios.

Best price i have seen on that unit is $99 . Did you find it for $85 ? I have heard that they are decent radios if kept out of the direct weather.

I priced several of the major marine suppliers in the PDX area and the best prices and service were from Rogers marine. It's nice to have local people who can do repairs, something I factor into the price before buying.

Trap,

When you get your VHF, be sure to familiarize yourself with the rules and etiquette. It is completely different from the "anything goes" CB chatter. Until recently, a license was required for VHF.

I have a CB for chit-chat and a VHF.
