Default Cooked crab longevity in fridge?

Does anyone know how long cooked crab will last in the refrigerator? I cooked and cleaned (removed gills et al., but still in the shell) a dozen on Saturday and was hoping they might last until Friday when a friend will be in town. Is that overly optimistic? Any tricks to keeping them palatable for a week? Thanks.

That's pushin' it IMHO, but doable. How cold is your fridge? Mine's barely above freezing. Good to have a fridge thermostat if you keep fishy stuff in there. Sniff test, but above all else: when in doubt, throw it out!!
I've used the milk trick in the freezer, works good. Ziplock, cover crab w/milk, freeze, DON'T RINSE after thawing!! Doesn't taste like milk, just sweet, sweet crab!!

I've been keeping it iced or in a very cold refer for up to 5 days all my life. Never got sick once. I've never had it past 5 days so I can't speak for that.

The health dept says to throw out left overs after 2 to 3 days max, but I've never had an issue with food after 5 days.

I am comfortable with three days. After that shame on me. Day three the meat is removed from the shell and put into a crabby patty mixture, rolled in panko and sauteed. No waste. BTW, if you make the crab batter you can freeze it and it is just as wonderful as fresh. But I will not let it sit for more than three weeks in the freezer.

Ok, lots of opinions here, think about the stores.

Caught , cooked and chilled, day 1, shipped to stores day 2 or 3, in store day 3,4 5 who knows.

Best advice is keep it in ziploc bags, covered in ice (keep water off crab) in the bottom of your fridge. this will put the crab at about 33 degrees or so, best you can do.

How sanitary were you when cooking and cleaning, that will play into the equation.........

I say, do the best you can and try it. Smell, taste and look (any slime, discoloration, wierdness). Frozen crab is not near as good as fresh, you might hedge your bets and clean 1/2 of the crab today or tomorrow, vacc pac if you can or just suck the air out of xip lock bag and then store meat on ice in bottom of fridge.

Good luck and please report back with the results.

Five days is pushing it, but if you keep it iced down in a fridge, you should be all right. Not as good as day one, but still acceptable. I wouldn't push it past five days. If you don't already have it on ice in the fridge, do it NOW!

Put your nose to it and take a deep breath through your nostrils. If you detect the slightest hint of ammonia (or overpowering odor), then it's bad. The ammonia is a by-product of the bacteria growing.

Learned this trick 20 plus years ago working in a high end fish house in Portland. Works for all fish fillets, crab and shrimp. Try it!

I work for Sysco Food and the sea food people say 5 days in ice and less in the fridge. If it smells bad dont push it down.

If you have excess to a vacum sealer, I would vacum seal the crab meat and freeze it. Then thaw it out the day you plan on using it.

Good Luck

Maybe I have an iron stomach, but I havent been sick after a week. Not saying it's ideal, but it has worked in the past ( I know its outside the accepted rule above but ). It may fall under the category of "don't try this at home".

Seafood and house guests 3 days.

I put mine in the veggie crisper, cooked and whole on a piece of newspaper. Have gone as long as 5 days but after 3 it begins to go south. Anymore I give away whatever I don't eat the first day. Then I dont have to pick it and freeze it.

As a couple of the folks already said, KEEP IT ON ICE IN THE REFRIGERATOR. I have a garage refrigerator and it's on the coldest setting, that's where I keep my fresh fish and crab and I keep it on ice on the top shelf right under the freezer. It stays very cold, sometimes just a little frozen, but not frozen solid. Under those conditions up to 7 days is possible, not ideal, but possible without the ammonia smell.

Shell what you have quickly, and I'll come over to help you take care of the rest.

Seriously, shell it, freeze it, then vac pack it. It'll taste fine for your guest that way, and you won't worry.

Go to one of the Asian markets and buy a few live crab and boil them when your guests arrive, nothing like fresh hot crab butter and freshly picked crab.

If its the in laws though I try to keep it in the fridge for at least 7 days then feed it to them. That way they never ask for crab again.

Just ate some last night (Monday) that I caught on Friday. It was in the camper fridge all weekend. Feel good today, no issues.

Tried something new and will report back later. We froze raw crab in the shell. I plan on cooking it this week to see how that works.
