Default Next Saturday where would you fish?

Anyone going out for TUNA next weekend? Anyone have any clue where to look?

I'm hoping for something a little closer than Westport.

CR was good over the weekend - can even get live bait in Ilwaco. Oh, and did I mention Halibut is open on Friday / Saturday as well?

I hear the Rainbow Trout Farm now has good numbers of fish available. sight fishing at it's best on lite gear and cheap bait. Just bring your own rock.

Dean, how many times do I have to tell you. There are no fish off the CR. Zero, nada, nothing. A barren waste land of sunken ships with pirates running amuck and vermin wandering the docks. If it were me I'd just go to the trout farm.

Key West do you know the live bait situation in Ilwaco? Will they sell to just Joe off the street or do you have to know someone to get bait? Do you have to call and get a reservation?

Just want to know how much to count on it.

$25 bucks a scoup. Get there before 5 when the charters usually show up. 4:30 worked perfect for me. 2 scoups filled my 32 gallon tank big time.

I will be running out of Newport or Depoe and heading NW, hope they are there(I think they are) I will head toward tuna town. The latest free SST shows some pretty fishing looking water(Well to me anyway) at the 61 spot.

I'm looking at Coos Bay pretty hard. Good chloro look and good temps out past 125 20. CR had good water as well but Coos is a shorter drive for me.

bait number is 503-741-3797

they were very excited when i told them on sunday morning about saterdays run.

if you call ahead they you should have a good feeling on their stocks. we baited up on sunday at 6:30 am without problems.

when the local charters start running tuna trips that is when supplys might dip.

Happy hunting....buy plenty of bait so you don't run out.

I was looking at the CR for sat but there's a big morning tide swing and leaving before day break would be in the plan. I don't know the CR any where as well as some here so I'm very cautious when it comes to ebb tides and crossing the CR. I would rather cross when I can see so I'll wait another week for a better tide set. It will be Depoe Bay for me this Saturday.
For my education will the more experienced CR skippers double check with what I'm seeing as far as the tides go and a first light crossing.

Pilar, we were thinking the CR and they will sell bait to any old Joe, Mike Ted or Jack. Like Bernie says be early. E0 was also cheaper at Ilwaco than Newport.

Dang I forgot about the big ebb tide. Wish I could get a report between now and then to seal the deal. We are due for central coast fish. The July 4th (tuna) weekend just happened this last weekend .. I figure we are three - four weeks late and have heard the same from others.

Latest chloro shot is looking better at 45 line out about 145 50 line. Looks more like a three where we looked at the 12-14 friday night. There are a few spots of 1 mixed in. Poor shot but able to get a little recon from it.

I think we will have fish out of Newport by the weekend.

Well, it's Newport for me and I hope for tuna. But it's too early to tell, at least for me. I'll go by what I see on terrafin. I want clearer water than the soup I saw in person last Friday. It was warm enough, just barely, but enough, but it was way too murky. Conditions change so much in just one day that calling it now, 3 or 4 days prior, is just too iffy. We may be due, but i don't think it's just a matter of being 3 or 4 weeks late, it's a matter of a different set of conditons: ocean, currents, weather, jetstream, and probably others that have big effects on where the warm water is and goes and how clear it is. But regardless it's Newport for me, the question for me is if tuna will be on the agenda.

I agree with Skein, we just had bad timing, probably be plenty of fish between Area 61 to Tuna Town, & all around, I wish I could go this weekend, but will have to wait til next week, good Luck where ever you go.

I'd put the boat on the trailer and go to Little Italy.

Yes eventually they will show up within 40 miles of Depoe. But what if they don't, for another 3 weeks? When you know for certain where they are.

Unless a person is just dying to be the first one to catch a boatload out of Depoe...

The latest SST shows the warmer water my be headed N. Good news. Ron m has it right--it can change from day to day. If it was Friday today and tomorrow was Saturday there would be no question in my crazy mind. It would be good to compare the latest chlorophyll with this shot. South at the 44 line and slightly North looks excellent. I would go this weekend but have other plans in Portland.

Like the previous guys said, hopefully the ocean changes, gets warmer and clearer. I'm fishing this wknd and reallly hoping for some good tuna water out of Newport.

If it doesn't, road trip??? Or, maybe based on the attached data from coast watch, go for a combo trip. halibut at the ranch + tuna.

take some time with this attachment. it shows water temps and chloro. Yes, it's out of date (July 26). I'll be printing this combo AND the individual chloros and SSTs before I leave. Gas is too expensive not go with all the data!!

The latest SST on Terra has 59.9 water at 45 09/124 55 28nm. That is looking pretty good. If we don't get a big blow tomorrow it could warm up even more. Maybe some of those Little Italy fish would move down. Just a thought.

IP,
I am not a skipper but have made many bar crossings and have figured CR tides for years. You are correct, Saturday morning 8/2 is a serious ebb tide at about 8amish, 10.8ft swing as I figure it.
Better to wait for the incoming or for a different weekend, definitely not good for an early am/first light crossing!!

My plan is to head to Nelsons Island and get our halibut then make a decision to go north or south from there. There is good water outside and SW of the ranch, but who knows where that will be by the time this weekend rolls around.

Current plan is to run both Fri and Sat. Get live bait from Ilwaco, then run for fresh halibat bait - I mean tuna. Load the boat with those critters, then stop for Halibut on the way in. Seems to be a pretty good plan most days.

I am running out of the CR.

Tide is not great in the am, but unless the bar is horrible when I go out to take a look, I am headed out to the 125 line with 2 scoops of bait. It takes a pretty ugly bar to stop 13 tons and a deep V hull.

So far the Ilwaco livebait place has been great and happy to have my business. I will call ahead to make sure, as livebait was the hot ticket last week.

Hmm.... I'm probably not the one to be answering this question. I usually error on the side of going out to see what it looks like. But, my analysis....

Current: Max ebb on Saturday of 4.6 knots at 0603 is flying. It can still be flat calm if there is no ocean energy pushing in.

Forecast for Saturday:

SAT
NW WIND 10 TO 15 KT. WIND WAVES 2 FT. W SWELL 5 FT.

And the swell is decreasing from Wed (7'), Thur (6'), down to 5' on Friday / saturday. Wind & swell will be from the NW.

So, If I were predicting what the bar will be like on Saturday at around 4:30A:
  • Current will be flying. Less than 4.6 knots but still moving.
  • North side will be unpassable (and you really never want to go there on an ebb unless you have a death wish).
  • Main channel will be iffy to unpassable - red line until 6 might be an option but from 8 to 6 - well I wouldn't plan on that.
  • Clatsop spit along the jetty will likely be the only option. This means leave Ilwaco and shoot over to B10 and look south.
My plan is as follows:
  • Get bait as early as they are willing to show up. The earlier they show up, the further away from max ebb we will be.
  • Motor out to B10 and look. If there is a swell pushing in at 10 that is noticable (like 2' or better), then I will hold off until I can see to the jetty (5A) so as not to get caught by a breaker comming in on the spit (been there, done that).
  • No noticable swell at 10 - shoot across to the jetty and out.
I will be attempting a crossing on Friday at the same time, and thus closer to max ebb. So if I can make it across on Friday, I'm sure Saturday will be fine.

I realize this doesn't help much in your planning process. But if we have enough boats I'm sure we could convince him to open earlier (like 3A) which would put us well within the safety zone as slack water is 3A. That would put us crossing the bar around 3:30A. If your nervous about running Ilwaco channel in the dark - just follow along.

I also always error on the side of going earlier rather than later.

My - but not a scientific analysis.

Key West wow great analysis. The advice I got a long time ago about CR was don't run it on an ebb. Ilwaco channel has probably changed since I ran it last but it wasn't too bad.

Thanks for the detailed info.

Just dont' cut close to the dolphin markers on the green side heading out. And at the gates of Ilwaco you definitly want to stay a little closer to the red dolphins as the channel has silted in and they have placed mini lighted Nun buoys smack dab in the center. Other than that you are good to go.

I'm tempted to trailer up to Garibaldi, but with my work schedule, it'll be tough to get there before 8AM Saturday morning.

As others have said, the latest SSTs look promising for central coast TUNA, which makes sense now that the North wind has disappeared for the time being... However, looks like Wetsand is calling for the North wind to return by Thursday/Friday.

I have to think the North wind is causing not only the cold temps, but the dirty ocean that others have been reporting as well. If we could just get the wind machine to shut off for a solid week or two, we'd have fish.

I'm holding out for central coast at this point...
