Surf fishing report for Waldport area
Hey All,
I was in Waldport last week and tried to do some surf fishing there. All of the advice I received said to not waste my time. They were right I tried 3 times to fish in the surf and/or the bay near the house we were staying in (In Bayshore estates area). I got a total of one sculpin. The seal population seemed amazing. I believe that the ocean in that area is fairly well scoured. On Saturday afternoon we drove up to Seal Rocks state park (where there were not any seals to be seen ). I caught a rock greenling (amazingly cool looking), a striped surf perch and a kelp greenling. They were all pretty nice sized (1 -2 lbs estimate). I caught them on a standard surf rig using shrimp for bait. It was pretty fun since my 8 year old daughter and 4 year old son each got to reel one in. Unfortunately, we did not bring a camera to the beach so I do not have any pictures. However, the funny part is that my success was captured for posterity by a guy who painted a picture of my while I was fishing.
Thanks to everyone for the advice!

Re: Surf fishing report for Waldport area
Good effort getting out there despite the advice. I just moved up here from southern California and did a lot of surf fishing there. I used to fish Santa Monica 3-4 times a week. When I moved up here a month ago, I was wondering if there was any type of surf fishing in Oregon. My feeling has been "not really." but after reading your report, you gave me hope. Maybe I'll try to find sometype of surf fishing here. Might have to get waders though. I'm used to just wearing shorts while surf fish.

Besides this trip, I have had good luck several times at Rockaway Beach fishing for red-tailed surfperch. Personally, I only do this during the summer and I just wade wet (wear shorts). I have thought about getting a wet suit, but I think that might encourage me to wade out deeper than is really wise. I also tried without success once at Cannon beach. However, I was fishing near Ecola creek and I do not think that this was necessarily the best spot. I think fishing closer to rocks may be the ticket. Next time I will try at Indian beach or some place similar.
Good luck.

From personal experience, I know you can do well fishing for perch at Seaside, Tillamook, and Newport. If anybody wants to know where, PM me or do a search. It's no big secret, but I'm just a lazy ass and don't feel like typing after typing all day!

How do you fish in the surf here? I'm used to Carolina rig, 6-8# test, 5/8oz. sliding egg sinker, and a #4 Mosquito hook. I've mostly used sand crabs and 1.5 inch grubs (in the Motor oil/red flakes color). Also have used Gulp in the past few years. We have a lot of the barred surf perch. I miss fishing the so cal surf.

I am from the East coast and so I use a traditional surf rod/rig. A 2-5 oz sinker with a couple of #4 dropper hooks usually baited with shrimp. I have thought about going to lighter gear, but then I would never get to use my surf rod Also, I am usually playing with the kids on the beach while waiting for a bite, thus anchoring the bait helps a lot with that. I just chuck it in put the rod in the sand spike and wait a bit. Then I reel it in a bit and wait some more (repeating until I am all the way in). If I do not get a bite after a few casts I move down the beach a bit.
