chesapeake bay retrievers
My brother has one and was wondering if anyone knows of any kennels that breed them? He is in the Portland area, and can only find one in Boise and Seattle. Does anyone know of any closer to portland?

When you get a CBR you want the best breeder you can find..watch out for backyard breeders...If you can get one from Northern Flight CBR's in Idaho you are going to be really really happy.

Re: chesapeake bay retrievers
Go to versatiledogs.com and ask the same question. You might want to find some of the waterfowl hunting web sites and ask there also.
Back yard breeders. I hate that term. Some of the best bird dogs in N. America come from folks who would be labled as "back yard breedrers." Knowing the pedigree and seeing the parents in action speaks volumes. Any breeder of hunting dogs with their head squarely on their shoulders can provide the hunter with outstanding dogs. A large breeding facility does not guarantee quality and many times just the opposite.
Make sure any of the breeders you deal with do not sell their dogs as pets and will place them in hunting homes only. Do not buy out of the newspaper. Good breeders will have waiting lists for their pups and don't need to advertise in order to find homes for the pups. Get references from previous pup owners.

Mar don Kennels. Not in PDX but one of the very best. We have had three chessies all from out of state, there are very few breeders in oregon.

I did a similar search, I don't think there are ANY full time breeders in this area. I found a couple up in WA.

Re: chesapeake bay retrievers
I got both of mine from the son of a person I used to work with. He is a "backyard breeder", but before I bought the dogs I did do some research. I got to see both parents, got hip credtification, full pedigree, etc.
The dogs themselves have been fantastic animals. Great family dogs to start, although they don't mind my wife like they do me.
Then there's the hunting...The first week i had Chelsea i took her to a fellow hunters house where she immediately started going through the ivy that covered a large part of his yard. Out she comes with a dead robin in her mouth and brings it right to me!
I've only hunted uplands with them, and although they can't run all day like the springers, they have fantastic noses and flush birds like crazy.
They are rather hairy in the summer, though...
I thought Pheasants Forever had some chessies at the Sportsmans Show...there must be some local breeders.

Re: chesapeake bay retrievers
The best dog I've seen was a lab/chessy cross. I got it for nothing and gave it to my friend at school who has a farm. The dog is a machine- ducks are easy, geese that the other, expensive dogs run away from, swims like crazy. I guess my only point is that this was from a friend who tried an experiment and nobody bought the dogs. Now he only does labs so he can sell them. Sometimes it is not about papers and purebreeds.

Don't you mean "Nor Dom" kennels? Good friend just bred his female to their main stud. Hopefully I'll have a new toe chewer in November. Other than that, Sunshine Kennels has some nice dogs (SE Idaho), and there is a few breeders in the Boise area. Do a search, it is a rare enough breed that you may not find anything close by. My first one was from Ft. Collins, CO and the current one is from the St. Paul, MN area. Be prepared to spend some coin if you are looking at any sort of performance titled parents (eg: hunt test or field trial titles), and personally I would not consider any that don't have at least senior hunter titles on the parents, your milage may vary.
