Default Halibut Hill (Newport)

Question: Where is the "Halibut Hill" out of newport? I have heard conflicting info. about where this is. Some call halibut hill a spot a couple miles outside the c-ranch? Some say there is a spot about 10 miles outside the north end of the pile called halibut hill? I have also heard "Nelson Island" called halibut hill? I am not looking for numbers, just a genral idea so that I can look on my chart and see it. I fairly well know my way around off of newport, but have never fished(I don't think?) this "halibut hill". Anyone willing to tell?

Halibut Hill is off Garibaldi, not Newport. I think that is the source of your confusion. The halibut spots out of Newport are The Chicken Ranch, commonly called The Ranch, and the rockpile (Stonewall Bank).

At least I'm not the only one confused! I know there is a "halibut hill" @ newport as well as garibaldi. Also rockpile, nelson island, bananna, c-ranch,ect. Just weird that it seems like so much confusion about the H.H. location.

There is indeded a "halibut hill" out of Newport. It's about 4.5 - 5 miles outside the chicken ranch. At the shallowest, it's 900 feet deep.

If you look at the chart, west of the chicken ranch, you'll see where the contour lines come up. It's typically only fishable with little to no drift.

There are spots on Halibut hill that are less than 900 feet deep. I guess it may not be right on top of the Hill itself, but just inside and it holds fish. The Canyon is a little NW of the Hill and is easily 900 ft all over it

Jon, we could only see two buoys (one set) at the ranch on Friday. There was plenty of room to fish away from it, and the fish bit just fine after a slow start.

The "Halibut Hill" location I fish out of Newport is located about 2.5 miles N. of the N. end of the ranch. I was given the location 7-8 years ago by another guy who called it Halibut Hill. It is 619 ft at the shallowest point I've found and not very wide. I fish it until I drift to about 725 feet then reset for another drift. Its fairly small and only really worth fishing if there is a slow drift, otherwise you get into very deep water really fast.

I pulled a 40" there last Saturday after running up there 'cause the ranch was slow. 2 years ago I caught a 53" from 705 ft up there. It's usually not as steady action as the Ranch, but often better grade of fish. Also seems to fish better in Aug-Sept than in spring.

From listening to the radio over the years, I've started to think this may be the same spot that some people refer to as "Harrison's", but I've never been given the location for Harrison's so not sure about that. Maybe someone here can clarify this for me??? Either way, this location is deeper than the Ranch, but not nearly as deep as the Hill out of Garibaldi.
Good Luck.

Yep.
North Rock Pile N44°32' W124°22'
South Rock Pile N44°29' W124°24'
Harrisons Ridge N44°31' W124°20'

I fished between it and the pile Saturday and finished with a boat limit of 5 (4 less hali-virgins walking the earth). Nice area!

OK, Cf and FF thanks for the clarification. As I said, I never had any numbers for where Harrison's was or even general loc.

I don't know if others have different locations for a Halibut Hill off Newport than what I have. Can't post GPS numbers for it, as they are all in the boat, even my backup paper list! Thanks again.
