Gary Walls, Harbor Master, Depoe Bay, OR
Hi Guys and Gals,
I just wanted to warn anybody that has had dealings with the Harbor
Master at Depoe Bay that there MAY be a change of Harbor Masters in the
near future. Seems that Gary has a "permanent part time" position and is
looking for a full time position so he can get little stuff like Health
Insurance.
Now, from my way of thinking, I think Gary has been an excellant Harbor
Master! He has dressed the place up quite a bit in the past year he has
been there, making the port a more desirable place to come too (and to stay at).
He has been very helpful when there have been any issues and continues to
work on getting any problems at the port addressed in a timely and reasonable
manner. I think it would be a real loss to the boating/fishing community that
use Depoe Bay as a port to lose him.
I mean, just look at the times he left the fish cleaning station open late
so Salty Dogs could come in late and cark TUNA!! I don't think the OLD Harbor
Master would have done that for us!! Gary also has a boat in the harbor
and is a fisherman. He understands when we talk to him!
Please, if you can possibly do it, send a letter to the Harbor Commission ...
just a few lines ... telling the commission what a great guy Gary is and how
we think everything possible should be done to keep this valuable resource
in port!!
His full name is Gary Walls.
Send mail to:
Harbor Commission
P.O. Box 8
Depoe Bay, OR 97341
Come on folks ... Gary has been there for US this past year. Now it's OUR
turn to step up to the plate with some KUDOs put in the right ears so we
can keep him around!!
Thanks,
-assAssin-

Re: Gary Walls, Harbor Master, Depoe Bay, OR
I thought Gary had secured a new position and was leaving the H.M. post as of January. Sorry it didn't work out for him!
BUT - I'm sure glad he's still Harbor Master. That guy is awesome. Always willing to lend a helping hand. Anyone who has arrived "early" for fishing at Depoe knows what I'm talking about.
Anyone who's had any kind of repair issue knows what I'm talking about (I don't know if we'd have gotten Puffin's trailer fixed if Gary hadn't been there).
Anyone who's come in late and had fish to clean knows what I'm talking about.
Anyone who's left the cleaning station un-tidy and read my tongue lashing about it has got to understand how awesome Gary is! I don't stick my neck out for just anyone.
Letter will drop into the mail today. Thanks F.A., for notifying us. I sure don't want to lose Gary!

Re: Gary Walls, Harbor Master, Depoe Bay, OR
Sending it today F.A.
I always drop a few extra dollars in the launch fee box and I would think with all the future Tunaholics this summer we could help them offset any costs they might have to help Gary out.
Always glad to help a good man.

Thanks Pilar's Mate and Wak'm&stak'm. It's amazing how far a few words
in the right ears (or to the right eyes) goes.

I'll send a letter too, and even though I've never used the facilities, I certainly plan on it this year. I'll tell 'em I looked at Depoe Bay mainly because of Gary's great attitude and reputation. Hope that helps.

Re: Gary Walls, Harbor Master, Depoe Bay, OR
Just sent my comments to the commission. Hope everyone follows through. Gary is a big part of what made Depoe unique and desirable as a summer port. Thanks FA for getting this going. I am not sure of the polotics...just sure I would like them to retain Gary!

Thanks to Hawg Hunter and WP
I tend to agree with both of you. Gary really makes the port
special (IMHO)

FA: I got to thinking... we're not going to get Gary in trouble if we write about how helpful he is... like how he'll leave the station/restrooms open or how he helped us fix the trailer when it broke?
I want to HELP him, not cause him to lose his job.

Re: Gary Walls, Harbor Master, Depoe Bay, OR
Pilar's Mate:
I don't think a commendation on Gary's helpfulness will HURT him
in any way. I, too, was worried that I might say the wrong thing
so I kinda made general statements: "Gary has had opportunity to share
his knowledge with me and has saved me from losing fishing days. For this I thank him ...".
I also encouraged the harbor commission to "not only back him in his
efforts to make the port a nicer place to be, but also do what is necessary
to keep him."
Anyway, I think if you just write a few lines that are honest and sincere,
it should be of at least SOME help to our favorite Harbor Master.

Re: Gary Walls, Harbor Master, Depoe Bay, OR
Just a quick update for those that didn't read my other thread ...
I saw Gary this past weekend and he said the Harbor Commission got
something like 8 or 9 letters from us here at Ifish (although he didn't
actually say "Ifish", I knew where they were coming from). I guess he
had a couple of the folks ask him if he was leaving as Harbor Master. This
gave him a good platform to air his issues. He said that usually the only time
there is a letter about the Harbor Master it is because somebody has a bone
to pick. Nobody *ever* sends letters of commendation.
Thanks to all that wrote letters!!
