Default C-Dory?

I went to Oregon City to check out Arima boats. While there I stopped at Sportcraft Marine and discovered the 22 ft. C-Dory Cruiser. It really caught my eye since it is set up with a galley, dinette, sink and sleeping quarters. Not to mention that it looks very transportable.

I will be moving to the Astoria area sometime in the future and presently own a 19 ft. Stryker. I'm concerned that the Stryker isn't enough boat to handle the big water that I might encounter while fishing and exploring there. I would welcome opinions of the C-Dory vs. the Arima or my Stryker. How does the Dory handle the rough water? Big Water?

Thanks in advance for opinions.

Graybeard, whatever you do, don't listen to any advice that a guy named Mr. Fisherman gives you. He'll try to tell you they're great boats but don't listen!

Ive got a 22 c-dory. Great boat on the ocean. In rough conditions can keep up with much larger vessels. Bad side - not great in lower columbia river wind chop with the flat bottom. It is probably the most solid platform while in the ocean - not much rocking back and forth. It is also like a cork and floats up over almost anything. Arima is going to be a similar ride not much difference in the pitch of the boat. I consider it one of the safest boats out there but you have to realize you are not going to get anywhere very fast - not built for speed. Although Ive taken it out over 30 miles on halibut and tuna days the more Im concentrating on tuna makes me wish for a larger say 24-26 built with a design that will get me there quicker and more comfortably. Did I mess you up?

One thing that surprised me about them, their load capacities seemed quite a bit less than comparable boats. I do like the lines of the boat and it would be nice to have a cabin.

Naw, you don't want no C-Dory.
They are Too light to justify a gas guzzeling tow rig, they are far too easy on gas, especially if you have a new 4 stroke on one and they are too warm with that cabin. Better buy a Bayliner...
Oh, If you would like a ride on mine I should have it ready for sea trial next week.
In all seriousness I love these boats. They plane at low speeds, just over 10 mph. Mine will do about 32 WOT with just a 75 HP motor. I have the 22' Angler and on the trailer with 58 gallons of fuel it only weighs 3250#, light enough to tow with my 6 cyl, SUV.
They have a pretty flat bottom and can really pound in a chop but they are very solid boats.
While looking at Arimas at the boat show a friend and I noticed a lot more flex in the Arima hull when we boarded. Now I am a big guy but the C-Dory doesn't flex, you decide. I'm not saying anything bad about Arima boats, I almost bought one.
Bottom line, I know that my boat will take more than I am willing to if it gets rough. It is easy to work on because there aren't any hidden wires and it is very utilitarian.
If you would like to know more ask the folks you will find HERE

I shopped for almost 5 years and brought mine home just in time for Christmass  .

<font size="2" face="verdana,arial,helv">Wiser words were never spoken.

A friend of mine has one about 20'. He opted for twin Honda 40's instead of a singe screw. He said weight and cost wasn't much different.

They really are fuel efficient.

When I was looking at them, the flat bottom scared me off.

I thought these were a displacement hull. Not so?

Good question, crabbait. I was under the the impression that they are a planing hull, since they will plane at 10 mph.

A displacement hull never gets out of the hole. They generally cruise about 6-9knts. The C-Dory is a planning hull, it'll jump up on plane, and stay, at about 8mph with a top speed of about 30mph which makes it great for handling at low speeds. Off plane it handles great also, my 22 footer is easier to handle and dock than my old 18' smokercraft. It's Not a real fast boat but it'll pull a knee boarder with two Honda 40's for power (if you ever wish to troll for sharks)

I spoke with the guy I mentioned in the earlier post and have some clarifications:

His boat is 22'.

The twin 40's cost about the same and weigh 125# less than a single 90 AND a kicker. (He didn't want to depend on just one motor).

Next month, he is cruising to a CDory rendevous in Olympia.

On a side note, he told me he just discovered that his Honda 40's are supposed to have their valves adjusted every 200 hours. That seems kind of high maintenance to me.

I could understand having the valves adjusted after the first 200 hours, but every 200 hours does seem high maintenance. Has anyone else heard of this?

I have a pair of Honda 40's, book says every 200 hrs or yearly to check-readjust valves. Thats ok with me, it provides some quality, bonding time with the engines.
SlabQuest, what's the name on your friends boat? We too are probably headed to the Olympia wingding

RH,

The old gentleman's name is Doug Hoffman. His boat has a gray stripe. He loves to talk boating. He practically lives down at the Edmonds Marina.

He hasn't put a name on his boat yet, but he's probably going to name it "Sea-Note"...
