Shake Down Run!
My parts are just about on my door step and very soon it will be time for my shake down run up and down the Columbia from Chinook Landing to Bonnevile and back.
Captain, will Double Gaynor be ready by next Thursday?
Gotta prove all systems prior to the inagural fishing trip in the salt the first week in March, weather and Mother Ocean permitting...
What do ya say? I think I can round up a crew...

Re: Shake Down Run!
Ray, I cannot go this next weekend (28th and 1st) the weekend after that I am OK and looking forward to it. Hope that is OK. If not perhaps someone else could act as company, and dewinterizer their boat at the same time.
I need to do that (dewinterize the Double Gaynor), but my much better half has a weekend scheduled at Newport in a friends Condo (or something like that) so I am kind of along to act as her guide.
So you think the Sea Lion will be roaring here pretty quick. Hope so. The joy and heart breaks of owning you own boat -- nothing like it.

Re: Shake Down Run!
I need my boat ready no later than the second weekend in March or my son's heart will be broken. He was promised last year that he could go to Three Arch Rock bottom fishing for his birthday this year and it has been all he talks about lately. Not to mention my own DT's. (Spelled DeTox i.e. no salt, Down Time etc..) I won't have my new radar up and my down rigger may not be installed yet but we will have what we need to go out and bag some Rock Fish and Sea Bugs.
John, stay tuned for details, I appreciate the offer and will take you up on it.
Details soon, I'm going out to the porch to sit and wait for the truck....

Re: Shake Down Run!
I just got off the phone with the shipper...
My parts won't be here till Monday :depressed:
John, I might have to charter you and Pilar to get my kid out or I might not hear the end of it...
This is going to come right down to the wire and I know how that typically winds up
I'm not going to take short cuts. This work needs to be solid.

Re: Shake Down Run!
No worries, Ray. Let me work this out with the Mate and we'll set a date that does not conflict with her plans. Wait till I get the 60 footer before you talk about charter. You can go with me for nothing but your companionship and the smile on your boys face.
You'll be happier with those boat repairs if you take the pressure off of yourself. That way the 10 trips to the boat shop for one more gasket or part will be easier to deal with.
I'll trade you, a trip on my 'Pilar' for a trip on your 'Sea Lion'. Your first TUNA! slaughter for example.
BTW, I'm glad you did not change the name. I could hardly think of a better one for you or your fishing boat.

Re: Shake Down Run!
Mr F, I have a recommended read for ya. River Horse by William Least Heat Moon. Its about a guy that goes coast to coast by river in his C-dory. He ends up out at the CR bar. Quite a bit of C-dory info in the story. I'll loan it to ya when I'm done if you havent read it.

Re: Shake Down Run!
I'm about a third of the way through it.
Not my style of writing (or piloting a boat for that matter) but I am determined to get through it. If nothing else it is a testimony to how tough the C-Dory is.
Thanks for thinking about me

Re: Shake Down Run!
Ray and John, I've been out of the area (of my computer) for a few days. Glad you guys seem to have worked out that little logistics issue about the trial run. I still need to get the Double G out, and get her up and running.
Ray, John is right, don't go busting a muscle or raising your blood pressure, getting in a hurry to get her on the water. As John said, he has your back side covered. You have a lot of support here.
Thanks John for stepping up. I will catch up with you two later.
BTW, will have the Double G in the same slip at southbeach this year.
See you soon

Re: Shake Down Run!
I would love to make the run with you all. My boat needs it. But its a long way , and i need to save my $ for summer fishing. Im planning to be fishing the week of April 12th thru the 19th, below Bonneville . I will have to nix a day of springer fishing, but , if someone is willing to join me then, ill do it.I have a feeling it will be very hard to make that run with the river full of spring nooks, flying past hog line after hog , watching boats fight fish.
Id better stop writting, im starting to feel sick just thinking about it. But then the boat ride sounds like a good time and knowing she(Nimpkish) is ready for tuna, will be well worth it. id. p.

Re: Shake Down Run!
Mr F, Pilar,
If there's an extra seat for a wannabe deckhand I'd sure like to ride along on the shakedown. I've never been up the river that far and can see myself taking my boat on the same check ride when it gets ready.
I can bring stuff along (tools, jokes, gas money) and it would give us a chance to visit and for me to learn a little more about what I've gotten myself into.
Not puttin' you on the spot, just throwing my hat in the ring.

Re: Shake Down Run!
When do you folks plan on doing the great shakedown? I am hoping to do the same thing in my boat which is close to being ready.
Would another tag-along boat disrupt the armada?
I would invite riders but my boat doesn't have any of the amenities, tin can head, etc. Any hardy ifish souls interested?
My boat is an open wooden dory approx. mph 30+.

Re: Shake Down Run!
I would also like to make that trip in my new boat. I have not done so yet and have heard Pilar talk about it before. If possible I would love to tag along and would have room for anyone who would like to go for a ride.

Re: Shake Down Run!
Hi Ray, glad you are almost boating again.
I'm going north for a few days, should be back Wednesday night. Over the weekend I put a few hours and a nice sturgeon in the boat. Up at Bonny for two days and then the windstorm down by T-6 today.
I'll call you, Ray when I am heading back south. I will have to work on the old truck and finish the fuel clean up I'm doing. There is some water in my fuel after sitting for 3 months.
This run is pretty easy and resembles the ocean version only in the distance. Anyone that wants to can tag along. Check your boat out first, 60 miles roundtrip is a long ways. Much nicer water in the big 'C', than in the ocean.

Cool! If you'll let me, John, I'd love to get some more time in as substitute "captain"... I could stand to learn a lot in a day, making the run with the boys... what'dya say?

Re: Shake Down Run!
See Jen, you need to be careful what you wish for. Shoulda picked winning the lottery lol. I'm glad you had the opportunity to captain Pilar and I envy John having a qualified crew member to take over if things go acording to a nondiscript plan.
I ran the boat in the drive way today after swapping the lower unit with Bait Boy, replacing fluids and checking a few things. It runs good and it shifts smooth. I'll be taking her to test under load and maybe get some blood on her later in the week. after that I'll be scheduling the river/sea trial.
I plan to take her to Olympia this coming weekend then Newport the next weekend for extended camp on the boat trips. My goal is to be ready to cross the bar, weather permitting, on the 15th for the Salmon opener and maybe a run to the pile for spiney and toothy.
My pulse is quickening just thinking about it. I have a lot to learn and I am looking forward to it  .

Hi Ray, what did you guys do about the carbs?
Did you find any dirt in the filters, bowls or hoses?

Re: Shake Down Run!
I'm still working on that but I'm gonna drag it to the river with my tools and materials and a sleeping bag and vow not to come back till I get it running right. I am close so I'll take a rod and some bait too
I'll let you know how it turns out.
I picked up a couple of new fuel filters just to make sure I have what I need. I sure do like the new lower unit with its new zincs and shiny paint. It shifts s m o o t h e.
Thanks to your stories and fresh Sea Bass I've got it worse than ever...

Re: Shake Down Run!
Here we go!
All systems checked and accounted for. Main and kicker running smooth and it's time to seal the deal.
I want to be ready for the opener on the 15th if at all possible so I am planning on a shakedown run on this Thursday. The weather will tell the story. I know it's an odd day for people who work a normal job but if anyone is interested in going let me know.
I have not made the run from Chinook landing to Bonniville myself but I have the charts...

Re: Shake Down Run!
Mr. Fisherman - Does it look like you are a firm GO for Thursday?
I think my boat will be ready.
Where is Chinook Landing and when do you plan to launch?
How long do you think the trip will take to Bonneville?

Re: Shake Down Run!
Hey Ed, Chinook landing is over in Troutdale. It's probably 25 miles up to Bonneville from there. I used to make the trip quite a bit but haven't in a long time but I recall it was a good hour up and shorter coming back, mainly depending on the tide and flows.

Mr. Fisherman - I am running a dory also, although not a Sea Dory, I think it will probably perform similarly. 90 Hp Honda & 8 Hp kicker, no cuddy cabin, 23'+.

Re: Shake Down Run!
Ed, with the weather and predicted river levels I think I should put this off. It is no fun dodging trees all day. We have time and my patience is increasing now that the boat is running so well. I'll let you know when I plan to make the trip and I would be delighted to be joined by you.
Stay in touch,
Ray
