NGF, hand held uhf radios dont have to be very fancy, the lower end will do you just find where you said you'll be useing it. My I make a suggestion the Uniden Atlantis works great for around $90.

I have a Standard Horizon I got for $159 (on sale)at FMS. Instant ch.9, weather, and scanning. Supposed to be submersible up to 30 minutes. Seems to work fine. I like the scan feature so you can listen to all of the important channels. A 12 hour charge lasts me around 14-16 hours if I don’t yap on it.

Take this for what is worth, but a cheap radio’s are just that, cheap.

Just my .02 worth. I did research last year for a hand-held to back up my fixed units and went with the ICOM. I am very happy with it. It is durable, easy to use, clear speaker, and the charge lasts 18-20 hours with easy recharge capability. Just a happy customer.

Which specific ICOM model did you get?

I also did some research on handhelds. The reports that I looked at actually rated the Standard Horizons above the Icom, because Icom made a change that made them not as water tight? Last year this same "group" picked an Icom model. I don't remember which model Icom. The Standard Horizon was either the Hx350 or the HX260? The Icom models were rated better in the fixed line though.

I am going to change because I want a watertight handheld. If you don't need a water tight model, then as soon as I get my new one I will have a Uniden Atlantis for sale

I have a ICOM IC-M1V. I first saw it at the boat show where it was turned on and submursed in an aquarium.

The main thing I like about it is the lithium-ion battery. WAY longer life and it doesn't need to be completely discharged before recharging like the ni-cads. (like the old cell phones vs the new ones).

Also it has a little moving display that lists what each channel is (ie: pleasure, bridge operator, commercial, etc.)

I use the Standard Horizon 460. It is compact enough to put in my life vest or pocket. It has a metal cover, is submersible, and you can add a mike. It has an extremely flexible ant. It isn't the cheapest, but the best imho.
