Default Northside Elk

Greetings,
My son drew a hair tag for the East Northside unit for elk this fall. We are going to try and do some scouting this summer but have never been in this unit. I totally understand if you don't want to give up "your spot", But could anyone point me in the right direction? My boy and I would greatly appriciate it.
Thanks

My appology,
My wife of 21 years and I live in Canby, Or. We have two great kids 15 & 19. I am a native of Tillamook and most of my famile still lives there. This is my first post on the hunting thread, years ago I was on the fishing thread under the moniker "Tyee". I appreciate everyone who contributes to Ifish and over the years their posts have taken nuch of the "guess work" out of our endevors. Again my appology for not telling you all a little about me.
Thanks

Welcome to Ifish and have fun on your hunt with your kid. Those are some of my fondest hunting memories and we're still making more.

Have drawn Northside hair tags several times, good luck. My opinion is to be sucessfull is to cover a lot of area looking for fresh tracks, be willing to spend the entire hunt hunting, and when and if it snows hunt in it. In 2005 we drew and had four nice cows down in two days hunting up in the crappy stuff.

Weather can be tee shirts or 10" snow and -15 degrees. Usually towards the later. Chains; 4X4; and don't put your water on the porch(keep it near the stove. Cut twice as much wood. If you're serious about filling a tag; in pre-season scouting MAKE a plan-B;;;; at Lower Elevations/with a hunting plan.
Stay off private land/airplane watches.
Scout and do it from 1/2HR before daylight to 9:30 AM. Look for tracks (fresh!) mark in NOTES were they're headed. Walk in and survey the feed! Find out where they head and try to assume why..Good Luck

Remember food is a main key to elk. And they range up to 20 miles/ so they might just return later in the season. HUNT THE ENTIRE season!

Wow!!!
Thanks everyone who responded to our thread. My son and I are grateful for all the info. We can't wait to start marking up our maps and getting ready. We look forward to giving you all a report after the season and sharing some pictures as well.
Thanks,
Mike
