Default Hali swivel question??

What type of swivels to you use . Why do you like that type. I was doing some reading and they stated that you should not scrimp when it comes to swivels. I can understand that part. but they also said to use the cork screw type swivels. The author said that the regulat clip type can come undone with a big fish. I was wondering what all you thought.

200# rated Barrel swivel, stainless if you can get them. I would skip the snap altogether. If you cannot live without the snap use a McMahon snap, they are very strong.

Another alternative is the coastlock in 200#. This is usually a Sanpo type ball bearing swivel with a heavy wire snap that has a hook on the end to hold the snap closed.

Many types of tackle in use for this fishery. I prefer heavy, plastic coated stainless wire and the 200# swivels with a 16/0 circle hook. Some are using 24 oz jigs or mono leader with J hooks and a spreader. What makes Oregon Butt fishing different is the depth. We fish 80 fathoms to 120 fathoms, not 10 to 50 like in Alaska.

I actually use a huge snap when I attach my leader. You can find them at most marine stores. I think it's rated at #200. The only reason I do it is if I fray a leader or it tangles up, I can unsnap it and snap on a new one in 30 seconds and be back fishing. I use #120 barrel swivels on each end of my leader section also. It's good to have them attached to each end of your leader, the one at the hook especially when a fish starts twisting and turning on you, your swivel will help to keep from twisting and straining your leader.
