Default Casting distance?

Rather than add this to the post about levelwinds, I thought I would start a new tread to further the discussion about levelwind vs. non levelwind.
Which do you think can cast further? This does not matter much to most people who ocean fish. Unless..... you plan on "throwing irons" some day. Some people also pitch swim baits, bait or live bait.
What do you think? I know what we have found but I thought I would see what the rest of you have to say. This is also one more thing to keep in mind when deciding on your reel of choice.

This seems like a no-brainer. The non-level wind reels are used by the world class casters, probably for the reasons stated in the other thread.

You can throw iron plenty far with a good level wind.

I think good casting really comes into play when trying to throw a live bait to boiling tuna. You can't zing it like iron, you will kill the bait or cast it off. You need to be gentle, yet get the thing out there. Newell reels are the best casters that there are IMHO.

In my experiance a non level wind reel will out cast a level wind reel. However there is one level wind that comes very close. The Shimano Calcutta comes both as a level wind and non levelwind. The levelwind version casts almost as good as the non level wind. An example of this comparision, cast a cloths pin with both reels, the non levelwind will cast 40 feet. the levelwind will cast 38 feet.

Personally I grew up using non level wind reels so I have a bias towards them.

I agree with ThreeMuch about the Newell reels. They're light and can cast a mile. And I also like the Penn 525 Mag reel and the GS series reels for casting distance. No question that the non-level wind reels will cast farther, but it definitely takes some get used to time.

I also use both types of reels. One of the ones I have been impressed with like others were with the Calcutta is my Penn 975 levelwind. It does cast extremely well for a levelwind.
