Default 9.8 hp. Merc.

Help Doc,

I have a 73' 9.8 merc. that until recently was running fine. It is an older motor but i know that it has relatively low hours. Compression is at 145 psi. I started the motor for the first time in a few months and it ran for a minute or 2 then died. I haven't been able to start it again since. The plugs are getting a nice hot spark, seems to be a problem with the fuel delivery. I took the carb off and could not see any problem with it. Help!!!!! springers are in.

Thank you.

Try checking all your connections on your hose to see if there is any air getting into the hose. Also check your ball to make sure that it is pumping up all the way and staying pumped up. I'm no mechanic but I do know this will make them not run

This sounds like a question for Boat Doc. Scan through several pages of this main IFish board and look for the Boat Doc thread. Ask your question there to the experts.

How old is the fuel and did you bleed the system and use new fuel? Just a thought

Is the boat stored outside? Did it ever get filled with water? The reason I ask is that I had an unfortunate start to last springer season....First trip of the year in early Feb and I started the motor for the first time in months. It started after some coaxing but died about 2 minutes later. Long story short, after my buddy and I tore up out hands trying to get that thing started we came to find out the gas tank had gotten filled with water because of a leak in the top of the tank. Fortunately, the motor purrs on......check your gas!!

Try fresh gasoline.

New fuel pump diaphragm never hurts.

You might try taking the carborator to a repair station and have them boil it out and place it on the test bench to give it a good going through.

My 9.8 is a 1981 and like yours, their a great motor.

Good luck
